Product Description

'The Scarlet Tides represents modern epic fantasy at its best.' Fantasy Book Critic.

Product Description

The Moontide has come, and a scarlet tide of Rondian legions is flooding into the East, slaughtering and pillaging in the name of Emperor Constant. But the Scytale of Corineus, the source of ultimate magical power, has slipped through the emperor's fingers. His ruthless Inquisitors are desperately seeking the artefact, before it falls into the hands of those who would bring down the Empire.

But there are some who have pledged to end the cycle of war and restore peace to Urte. They are the unlikeliest of heroes: a failed mage, a gypsy and a lowly market-girl.

As East and West clash more violently than ever before, Urte will discover that love, loyalty and truth can be forged into weapons as deadly as swords and magic.

More About the Author

Hi, I'm a New Zealander, raised in sunny Hawkes Bay on the east coast of the North Island. I was lucky enough to have my first novel accepted for publication by HarperCollins New Zealand. It is a YA (young adult) fantasy set in New Zealand, called 'The Bone Tiki', which subsequently won Best First Book at the 2010 NZ Post Children's Book Awards. It is first in what has become the Aotearoa Series. Two sequels have followed it: 'The Taniwha's Tear', 2010; and 'The Lost Tohunga', 2011. They blend the mythology and history of New Zealand, with modern day fantasy adventure. They're available through several New Zealand/Australian based websites, if you're interested.

I've also written a four book YA fantasy series set in India, through Penguin India. Entitled The Return of Ravana, the series comprises 'Pyre of Queens', and the forthcoming sequels 'The Ghost Bride' [Note in India this book is entitled 'Swayamvara'], 'Souls In Exile' and 'King of Lanka', all through Penguin Books. The series blends myth, history, past lives, and echoes of the famous Indian epic, 'The Ramayana'.

My latest project is the Moontide Quartet, an adult epic fantasy set in a world called Urte, where an east-meets-west conflict is escalating into an apocalyptic struggle for supremacy. The first book, 'Mage's Blood' is now out, and the second; 'Scarlet Tides' is to be released later in 2013.

As you'll note from the above, I like to ground my writing in mythology and history, both of which I've studied at university. I've lived in India and the UK, as well as travelled in South East Asia, Europe and America.

Away from writing, I love football, movies, wine, travel, obscure music, and being with my wife and children.

5.0 out of 5 stars Solved all issues from the original book 26 May 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
I had some complaints about the first book specifically it was filled with unnecessary amounts of explanation in developing the world and moved at a snails pace. I was glad that the pacing in the second installment was far superior, the story more interesting. This mixed with the action and character development meant I could not put the book down.

I cannot wait to see how the story further develops.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ripe fantasy 18 Jan 2014

I read it twice and will probably read it again. A gripping set of stories running through a dark and realistic tale. I hope very much that my favourite character will survive (Elena Anborn) she is very different from almost all female heroes I have ever read about: a fascinating character. I hope to meet her someday although I may not survive the encounter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good middle book 17 Jan 2014

Generally the mids of a trilogy falls flat but this one continues the good work from the first, sometime maybe a bit too intense
3.0 out of 5 stars Good in parts - story becoming somewhat predictable at times though 9 Feb 2014

Continues well from the last book - the plot has been developed well and sets things up for the next 2 books in the series. Also start getting used to the magic elements slowly (more complex than other fantasy series in my opinion).

On the flip side, some developments/twists are easy to predict. Also, major inconsistency in Elena's character and some events in the book don't make much sense.

excellent follow up to the first fantastic book. very well written in a flowing manner with several subplots developing on their own. my only complaint would be that the battle scenes are meager in comparison to The game of thrones novels. Cant wait for the next novel

Once you get past that all their peoples represent very closely our world counterparts, this is very interesting and original fantasy. I just could not put the book down.
