Amazon.co.uk Review
As the title suggests,
20th Century Newsmaker concentrates on people who have hit the headlines, rather than just the great and the good. Thus the 1000 people selected includes more stars of sport and popular culture than many similarly themed CD-ROMs (like DK's
20th Century Day By Day). From the main screen you can search for people by both time period (up to 1996) and subject, such as sports, politics, crime, arts. There is a strong emphasis on the visual, with your selection appearing in the form of a picture gallery. The comprehensive index, which takes a little time to get used to, lets you refine your search by such things as country and even zodiac sign. The entries are quite short but reliable, but corners have been cut in the copy editing, with mark-up codes left in the text, and minor errors cropping up. (For example, the German politician Manfred Worner is indexed under Woerner.) --
