Product Description

To thousands of people escaping- Allied prisoners, refugees, Jews and others wanted for various reasons by the Nazis - one of the greatest heros of WW11 was a tall, jolly Irish Priest, Monsignor Hugh Joseph O'Flaherty. Working throughout the warat the Vatican, he organised, unofficially an incredibly efficient underground system which gave shelter to inumerable escapes. This very readable account of his adventures is an exciting story and throws some interesting light on one of the lesser-known aspects of the war.

Brilliant and gripping about our own family who knew Hugh O'Flaherty well. J.P. GALLAGHER did his research well. True exploits.

5.0 out of 5 stars The scarlet pimpernel of the vatican 27 Mar 2013

An amazing story. The courage and humour in such a true and sad story is amazing. I have since ordered the book and the detail is fascinating. Although the book is out of print now I got a really good second hand copy. It doesn't even look like it has been read. I would recommend this film for its courage, danger, historic value, humour and survival stories.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating, well researched telling of a forgotten part of WWII History. 17 Feb 2013

A superbly researched and finely written book that tells the story that was unknown to me prior to my watching Gregory Peck in the made for TV movie “The Scarlet and the Black” which was based on this book (a fine move that follows the book fairly closely). I found an original hardbound copy of the book in good shape to give to my 86 year old mother who loves the history of the Catholic Church. I read the book, cover to cover, in two evenings before sending it on. My mother and I both were enthralled in the telling of the cat and mouse game between the “Scarlet Pimpernel of the Vatican” and the Gestapo. I bought another paperback copy of the book that was retitled with the name of the movie to share with my wife who loves murder mysteries and she too was gripped by the telling of the story of the near misses and the tragic losses of those who stood between the innocents and the Gestapo. 6 stars out of 5!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars The Scarlet Pimpernel of the Vatican 17 Aug 2012

When I first saw the movie "Scarlet and the Black" (circa 1983) starring Gregory Peck, Christopher Plummer, I developed a lot of admiration for the main character Hugh O'Flaherty. In the opening credits of the film, it says it is based on a true story and cites this book "The Scarlet Pimpernel of the Vatican" by J P Gallagher. Hence I was very keen to read the book. The book tells a somewhat different story - the film tends to attribute a lot of the actions to Hugh O'Flaherty but in the book it is discovered that is not always the case. Anyway, I found the book interesting to read and I really liked the photos showing some of the people who were part of the "organisation". Before purchasing the book, it was said to be in good condition, but when I received it, it was actually in excellent condition, so that was a bonus!

I ordered this book for my mother as she has wanted a copy of it as it is related to a relative who was working in the Vatican in the same era. The book is in remarkably good condition and it even had a plastic protective cover over the paper jacket. I'm glad I was able to find one as it is out of print. Thanks for helping me make my mom's day!
