Book Description

10 Oct 2005
The Terror has begun.

Paris, 1792. Each day scores of the French nobility feed the guillotine. They are trapped in the capital. There is no escape.

But rumours whisper of a league of young English gentleman of unparalleled daring who are risking their lives to spirit aristocrats across the Channel. They leave no trace behind them except a note from the 'Scarlet Pimpernel'.

The ruthless spy master Chauvelin is determined to stop the rescuers by fair means or foul, and, desperately outnumbered, the Scarlet Pimpernel and his men must use all their wits to evade capture and stay alive.

5.0 out of 5 stars Timeless delight. 12 Mar 2007
By L. Hay VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
This is a lovely book which has everything, and has stood the test of time. There is adventure, espionage, blackmail, intrigue and romance. It has atmosphere and tension, and you cannot help but to cheer on Marguerite as she persues her husband to save him from the vile Chauvelin. Delightful characters depicted with grace and charm, in keeping with the era. A thoroughly good read.

Format:Audio Cassette
Baroness Orczy's classic story set in 1792 during the French Revolution is about a band of valiant Englishmen under the leadership of a mysterious man whose unsurpassed grit, audacity and clever disguises would rescue the fortunate few aristos from the insatiable Madamme Guillotine.

Actor/Writer Hugh Laurie (Cousin Bette, Jeeves and Wooster, The Gun Seller), does rightful justice to The Scarlet Pimpernel as he brillantly brings this classic to life. With sharp characterizations of the villainous French agent Chauvelin; unerring shifts from foppish and inane to the cold, proud, passionate Sir Percy Blakeney and a dozen other characters, each with their own distinctive voices and accents, Laurie gives you the illusion of listening to a cast of superb readers. Thoroughly enjoyable! Drawback - it's abridged. Asset - The Triumph of the Scarlet Pimpernel.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read 2 April 2010
By Sereima
Format:Paperback
I originally read this book (and the rest of Orczy's Pimpernel books) when I was 12 and remember thoroughly enjoying them then. 13 years later I have re-read the books, and they are still just as enjoyable as they were the first time round.

The Scarlet Pimpernel books never seem to date, and seem much more readable than many of the well known books written around the same time.

3.0 out of 5 stars A romp
A romp, a bit of fluffy fun, somewhat spoilt by the story being so well known and everyone of the right side being beautiful/hansome/charming etc.
