Amazon.co.uk Review

Cathy Scarlet and Tom Feather are on the brink of realising their dream: to open a catering company in the heart of Dublin, the eponymous Scarlet Feather. Friends since college, Cathy and Tom are sure of each other and united in their shared goal, but not everyone around them is so supportive of their ambitions.

A disapproving mother-in-law, an overworked husband, a distracted girlfriend and terrible twins, hell-bent on creating as much havoc and asking as many difficult (yet humorous) questions as they possibly can, stir up recipes for trouble. Passion could very well be a feature on the menu as Tom and Cathy turn increasingly to each other for support and grow ever closer in their shared aim of making Scarlet Feather the best catering company Dublin has ever seen.

In Scarlet Feather Binchy once more does what she does best: introducing a cast of characters whose personalities develop gently and whose lives are carefully and almost imperceptibly blended into the mix of love affairs, heartache, humour and family ties. One of the finest aspects of Binchy's feather-light touch is that it's almost possible to forget that you are reading a work of fiction and feel instead as if you are amongst a group of friends. --Emily Lowson

5.0 out of 5 stars the "usual" Binchy Staff - heart-warming & wonderful, 5 Dec 2005
By
This review is from: Scarlet Feather (Paperback)
Scarlet Feather is another wonderful Binchy classic that I simply couldn’t put down after I started reading it. It is about how Cathy Scarlet and Tom Feather, friends and business partners, are trying to make their dreams come true: starting and running the most successful catering business in Dublin. Besides professional issues they also have to face lots of personal problems that get sorted out predictably, but satisfactorily, to everyone’s liking. And there are quite a few problems to sort out: there is Cathy’s husband, Neil, a busy civil rights lawyer, and her awful mother-in-law. There is Tom’s glamorous girlfriend, Marcella, who is willing and determined to sacrifice everything for a model career, his parents who don't warm to the idea of their sons being a caterer instead of following his father in the business. Lots of characters cross each other’s path and influence each other’s lives making the book exciting and interesting right up to the last page that seems to come regrettably quick.

5.0 out of 5 stars Swan Song?, 21 May 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Scarlet Feather (Paperback)
I had heard that Scarlet Feather would be Maeve Binchy's "swan song." I then saw the title, you know, with the feathers? Not so. The title comes from a combination of the two main character's names, Cathy Scarlet and Tom Feather. Cathy and Tom, friends not lovers, form a cartering business. A story about a cartering business...how delicious I thought. Again I was wrong. Like all Binchy novels Scarlet Feather is a saga with characters and villians--and a mystery to be solved. As a fiction author I read for more than to just entertain myself but to appreciate writing style and to learn. Over the years I have come to know that Ms. Binchy has a gift for characterization and dialogue. Come on Maeve just one more book...please!

4.0 out of 5 stars Just released in Australia and....., 29 Sep 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Scarlet Feather (Hardcover)
I have waited to long for a new release from Maeve Binchy, and I was not disappointed. I am on holidays and could not wait to go back to bed every night to read more. I found the twins especially endearing, could not wait to see what adventures they got up to next, I did find it slightly predictable, I did think that Cathy and Tom would end up together by the time I was a quarter the way through it. But along with this predictability came some funny little unexpected twists, in true Maeve style. I just read on here that this is to be her last book, Maeve if you read this page, please reconsider, please at least one more book? I love your work so much you have inspired me to want to write a book of my own, set in Ireland of course, a place I fell in love with many years ago.
