This is an enchanting, vividly imagined (or remembered) story of life in a Native American tribe in pre-colonial times in which the author brings alive the sounds, colours and feel of the culture and way of life. The chief's daughter (and narrator) Piyanah and her soul-mate Raki are brought up together by their mother to view critically the superstitious and sexist practices of their tribe and eventually to start a new tribe based on principles of equality. The absurdity of both sexual discrimination and superstitious religion is graphically and insightfully portrayed, and this juxtaposition of true metaphysics with empty manipulative religion, and of gender oppression with the freedom of both genders to explore their destiny gives this book universal significance and relevance. At the same time it's both a beautiful love story and an excellent tale of adventure.
