Brian De Palma's update of the classic 1932 crime drama by Howard Hawks, Scarface is a sprawling epic of bloodshed and excess that sparked controversy over its outrageous violence when released in 1983. It's a wretched, fascinating car wreck of a movie, starring Al Pacino as a Cuban refugee who rises to the top of Miami's cocaine-driven underworld, only to fall hard into his own deadly trap of addiction and inevitable assassination. Scripted by Oliver Stone and running nearly three hours, it's the kind of film that can simultaneously disgust and amaze you (critic Pauline Kael wrote "this may be the only action picture that turns into an allegory of impotence"), with vivid supporting roles for Steven Bauer, Michelle Pfeiffer, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, and Robert Loggia. --Jeff Shannon

Product Description

This re-make of the 1932 Howard Hawks classic has up-and-coming gangster Tony Montana (Al Pacino) arriving in Miami as a Cuban refugee. With his friend Manny (Stephen Bauer), Tony carries out a hit on a politician, earning him the gratitude of drug dealer Frank Lopez (Robert Loggia). Tony rises rapidly in the 'organization', but courts disaster when he becomes involved with Lopez' cocaine-addicted wife, Elvira (Michelle Pfeiffer).

5.0 out of 5 stars The World Is Yours 8 Mar 2005
By A Customer
Scarface is one of those rare, rare film experiences you'd be hard-pushed not to enjoy. Brain De Palma's 1983 remake of the 1930's flick had all the ingredients of a classic: a great script, a defining soundtrack and a leading actor in his all-time prime. Al Pacino's performance as Cuban gangster Tony Montana has now almost received iconic status among film fans. Few would deny that Pacino's take on cocaine-snorting Montana is not one of his career best. Scarface is seen nowadays as one of the top gangster films, maybe not in the same ilk as say The Godfather, but still a thoroughly entertaining piece of cinema. This 2 Disc Special Edition, although not loaded with features, still should be part of any respectable DVD collection out there.
For those unfamiliar with the story, Scarface follows the path of Tony Montana, a charismatic Cuban refugee, who arrives in Miami looking for the American dream. Tony's up-front and tough personality makes him go right to the top of the cocaine underworld. However, no one, as they say, stays at the top forever. There are consequences to his success, and as Tony learns, money and power can't give you everything. A special mention should go to Michelle Pfeiffer, who superbly plays Tony's love, in what was her first major film role.
The sound and picture quality was in my eyes the highlight of this DVD package. The new digital transfer was near flawless, and the comparisons between this and the old VHS are unbelievable to be honest. Hearing Pacino talk so clearly in that hilarious accent of his was a delight and the famous 'Say Hello To My Leetle Friend' ending blows you away with all the sound.
The extras shown on disc 2 are not in abundance, but what you get here is quality not quantity.

5.0 out of 5 stars People's reason's for not liking this movie... 23 Sep 2011
I'm not going to review this moive as everyone knows it's an oustanding film. I would like to just quickly comment on that the picture quality and 7.1 dts sound is stunning. It would of been nice in some night time scene's to see abit more attention to detail with grain's and dark black's. But that is very, very slight complaint. Extra's are good not oustanding but very solid.

However, this moive review is really to question the people that have discredited this movie. The people who rate this poorly state that it is over the top and too violent etc etc. But if they actually had a brain cell, they would realise that the whole point of the film, is for that very reason. Going from the music, to the fashion, to al pacino's voice, to the violence, that cocaine is like gold. The whole movie is a metaphor for the time in Miami in the 80's, time of excess.

Find it quite embarassing for people to slag of an oustanding movie, when they havent got a clue in the reasons why it's a so called 'bad movie'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Say Hello To My Little Friend 29 Nov 2004
By RiDdLe
Having been released in 1983, Scarface may be a dated movie by todays standards (this is very clear in the horrendous 80's pop music and bright hawaiian shirts used throughtout) but it still, to me, ranks among the greatest and most influential movies of all time.
Al Pacino stars as the unforgettable Tony Montana, a Cuban refugee who starts off dishwashing, but guns his way to the very top of Miami's cocaine empire. He plays the part really well: being ruthless and also coming up with some brilliant lines which orignially came from the film: "every dog has his day" being one of many that springs into mind.
The '18' certificate is deserved, though. If ever anyone wanted a lesson on how to take drugs, they would need to watch this movie as had drugs are used throughout, aswell as the bloody violence (the chainsaw scene being up there) and constant swearing.
Being very influential, this movie has been the main inspiration for Grand Theft Auto Vice City. Even Diaz from the game is a carbon copy of a chainsaw wielding bad guy from the film. Snoop Doggs album "every dogg has its day" is also influenced by the movie, with a quote from the movie appearing in the album.
This is one of those movies which just have to be seen. At 2 and three quarter hours, its not short, but the movie never drags and the final scene ranks among the government lobby shootout scene from The Matrix, the beach landing in Saving Private Ryan and the russian roulette scene in The Deer Hunter as one of the best and is perfect in summing up Tony Montana.

"Me? I want what's coming to me... The world, Chico--and everything in it." - Tony Montana
"Scarface" was a box-office flop when it first came out and was literally trashed by almost every film critic that you can think of. Many years later, it's considered a classic and some say it's one of the most influential gangster movies to ever to be made. There's real power that cannot be denied that is held within this amazing masterpiece that has one of the highest replay values I've ever experienced. I can NEVER get tired of this outstanding gangster epic, and it is a grand event that stands out from most crime sagas--and most films althogether.
Tony Montana came to America with nothing, with the exception of a dream to become a somebody; a successful and powerful somebody. He turns to a life of crime and slowly but surely becomes a well-established gangster. However, Tony becomes greedier and more consumed with power as the days go by, and it's only a matter of time before he starts to want it all. His "wanting it all" leads him to his ultimate demise that will consume his fate. This is a story about starting with nothing and then having everything--only to lose it all in then end.
Words cannot even begin to describe how passionately I feel about this movie. This is a crime saga that has layers of character and story. It isn't just a senseless bloodbath with mindless violence around every corner. No, this movie has a certain path and structure. Al Pacino literally makes the role of "Tony Montana" his own and never loses sight of it for a second. I can't think of another character that is "impersonated" in the real world more than Pacino's "Tony Montana.
