Having had a scare with my dog and a child she had bitten, there was obviously a very strong need for me to read more about why my dog has what has always previously been referred to as 'fear aggression', and for me to try and train her out of her aggressive behaviours. She was attacked as a pup by a man in the park with the working end of a retractible lead, and had grown more and more afraid of anyone she didn't know and other dogs she didn't know, ever since. This book described my dog perfectly (i.e. she has a pirhanna bite, over reacts to everything, is hyperactive/hyper responsive to any stimulus, barks at strangers, lunges, and yes she has bitten a few times). Imagine my relief to realise that a) these are researched and understood behaviours in dogs and there are good reasons why they behave this way and b) there are very simple and practical ways for me to 'train' those behaviours out of my dog. More importantly, the training methods offered in this book by the author are ALL positive, kind, solid and good methods. The book also explains why the training methods employed by the likes of Cesar Milan et al (she doesn't name him - she doesn't have to) are so damaging and potentially lethal to both dogs and people (and to our relationship with our dogs). Furthermore, this book explains why the half-arsed and old-fashioned training methods to stop dogs lunging, barking, etc. that I had picked up along the way were actually having the reverse effect to the one I wanted - I have been teaching her to bark more and react more all along, by shouting at her and becoming stressed and angry myself. Stupid, stupid. Read more ›

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book! 21 Sep 2011
Format:Perfect Paperback
Scaredy dog really is one gem of a book. I currently care for a female dog Labrador/German Shepherd cross, who has issues regarding being nervous around strangers, lunging at bikes, other dogs etc. She is now 2 years old and improving but only slightly. After reading this book I believe the dog hasn't had the correct training yet sadly. Reading this book has completely helped me to understand the reasons for her behaviour (one being that she missed out on the prime socialisation period)but also, that there are other dogs out there just like her, and they have been rehabilitated. The book makes you feel positive about training your dog, that putting her down isn't necessarily the right choice in such a matter (as lots of people have made me feel)and that it's all well..okay.

Every example in this book, is what my dog does, and Ali details simple but effective training method for such reactions using positive reinforcement and negative punishment, but she also gives reasoning behind her methods. Scaredy Dog provides information about the various training techniques available for dogs, but then details which are not appropriate for such a dog, some techniques of which have been recommended to us by professionals. (Also, just reading a good explanation of Positive punishment, negative punishment etc, was great)

Having tried professional trainers and not seen much improvement since using the training methods, this honestly has helped me no end. Thank you Ali!!!xx

5.0 out of 5 stars great book 19 May 2012
Format:Perfect Paperback|Verified Purchase
my gsd has always been a handful and we've tried so many things honestly she tires me out she is so damn clever and everything I try only works for a short whiley - and i am an psychologist!. bought this book instead of visiting a 'professional dog trainer' - too expensive for us we both have good jobs and educated beyond post grad level but it is x2 our rate to hire one of these !! - and no guarantee of success either. i'm pleased with this book - she also shows other traits not covered in this book but this book has really helped me understand how to calm her down - a bit! we are having a much better relationship now and i have shifted my emphasis from negative reinforcement to postive in terms of balance - (punishment has never worked!)this is working pretty well at the moment. I love the way the book provides such an interesting read - it's not simplistic at all yet provides a pretty clear guide/practical solutions to dealing with a reactive dog.

This is the most helpful book I have read on coping with and training the reactive dog. The style was sympathetic, easy to read and very helpful. I felt guilty that I gave up on my reactive dog and had her put to sleep after an attack, but I hadn't read this book then. Maybe some dogs will be saved if more people read it. I couldn't put it down and will be looking out for more books by this author.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good read 25 Oct 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book made interesting reading for an owner on the edge with a reactive dog! I could identify with all that was being said and though it only offered a few ideas that I wasn't already aware of it was good to read about other people's experiences and how similar the behaviours were.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good In Parts 21 Jan 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The first few chapters of this book are really good; well-written, enjoyable, and full of useful information about operant and classical conditioning; what it means for a dog to be reactive and how to help them re-learn their emotional responses to trigger stimuli.

Unfortunately, after that, the author totally jumps off the deep end. She goes into hand-wavy territory, talking about things like "energy circles", "toxins", Bach flower remedies and so forth. Some of her points about nutrition are well made - it is important to feed a dog the sort of food they've evolved to thrive on, but not because failing to do so causes a build-up of "toxins". I had to stop reading when she said homeopathy was a good approach, because (and I'm paraphrasing here) "even if it is a placebo, if I feel like it's helping and my dog picks up on that, then it really *is* helping!".

I'd recommend Patricia McConnell's "The Cautious Canine" instead of this book. Sure, it may look much thinner, but that's because it's not full of pseudo-scientific claptrap.
