I was really wary of buying (yet another) edition of this 'interesting' movie after all the waste-of-time Public Domain versions already out there, but I was pleasantly surprised. It's acceptable - no, it's better than that, technically it's quite good.

I call this film 'interesting' only because, as most people already know, this was Lugosi's only full-length colour feature. The plot itself is another matter (somewhat tepid and pointless - you may be 'bored to death'! but it's a revelation to view a copy that, despite showing its age (slightly muted colours), is free of the usual splices and crackle that so ruin other cheap issues of this movie. Someone mentioned somewhere that it's an NTSC-to-PAL transfer (which it is) and I feared that this may affect the image quality, but it doesn't. No jerkiness, no odd framing or anything like that.

If you're a Lugosi completist and you've yet to acquire an acceptable version of this strange little film, then here it is. Buy with confidence!

A word of warning 5 April 2004
Format:DVD
I just noticed that this particular presentation is stated being in black and white. Be sure you purchase a copy which is in colour! At least amazon.com sells some versions, and they're usuall region free. I hate to think how this film must look like when in B/W. The colours are one of the main aspects of this entertaining film.

It is very easy to get a copy of this movie, but this is the best. It could still do with restoring but it is the best avalible copy at the moment, so get this until a better edition is released.
