If you can make it through the first 15 minutes, this is actually a decent film. If you're not a fan of horror, then this isn't going to change your mind. The movie is set in Pennsylvania, although it was shot in Canada on an estimated $500,000 budget.
3 friends (Dustin, Owen and Trevor) are making their way home from a skiing trip, when they lose control of the car and crash. Trevor hurts his leg in the crash, so Dustin and Owen wander off in search of help. They come across an isolated house/cabin owned by Ivan, he seems friendly enough but has a sinister undertone. You know exactly what happens from there, we've all seen it a dozen times before.
The acting early on by some is diabolical, the worst probably being the cook who luckily only has a few shouted lines. The actors that played Trevor and Owen were also the directors, John Geddes and Jesse T Cook. Steve Warren who played Ivan reminded my of Tom Noonan and spoke like Fred Gwynne in Pet Sematary. I thought he had the best character and gave the best performance in this. Ivan's partner in crime was Wade, the more sadistic of the two. When i first saw him, I thought it was Robert Carlyle reprising his role from The World Is Not Enough. There's a decision that Wade and Ivan make with about 20 minutes left, which just seems proposterous and done to extend the running time.
Not much happens in the first 45 minutes, but it gives us the chance to get to know the characters before the blood starts to spill. If the acting was better I may have cared more, but I didn't feel much sympathy. It's like The Hills Have Eyes in the snow, and it's not too bad. If you want to see something similar but done better, just watch The Hills Have Eyes, Texas Chainsaw Massacre or Wrong Turn.
