Book Description

21 Oct 2004
In SCAR TISSUE Anthony Kiedis, charismatic and highly articulate frontman of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, recounts his remarkable life story, and the history of the band itself. Raised in the Midwest, he moved to LA aged eleven to live with his father Blackie, purveyor of pills, pot, and cocaine to the Hollywood elite. After a brief child-acting career, Kiedis dropped out of U.C.L.A. and plunged headfirst into the demimonde of the L.A. underground music scene. He formed the band with three schoolfriends - and found his life's purpose. Crisscrossing the country, the Chili Peppers were musical innovators and influenced a whole generation of musicians. But there's a price to pay for both success and excess and in SCAR TISSUE, Kiedis writes candidly of the overdose death of his soul mate and band mate, Hillel Slovak, and his own ongoing struggle with an addiction to drugs. SCAR TISSUE far transcends the typical rock biography, because Anthony Kiedis is anything but a typical rock star. It is instead a compelling story of dedication and debauchery, of intrigue and integrity, of recklessness and redemption.

5.0 out of 5 stars Read this book 7 April 2006
Format:Paperback
Scar Tissue is a cracking read. How Mr. Kiedis is still alive is a miracle. The huge amount of drugs, the accidents (bad accidents), the women, the band, the highs and lows are all honestly recounted in this oustanding autobiography.

A.K. gives an insight into the mind and behaviour of an addict with refreshing honesty; there's no preaching here. He recounts his childhood and writes much about the Chili Peppers themselves, detailing their ups and downs (there's a lot of both), their creative processes and the meaning behind some of their songs.

Whether you're a fan of the Chili Peppers or not, this is a great autobiography and I thoroughly recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars A cut above 19 Oct 2006
Format:Paperback
A totally convincing and gripping account of the highs and lows of stardom. Although written chronologically this is more than another diary of a rock and roll band. Kiedis comes across at times as a man who has everything and nothing and his battle with drug addiction which flows through the pages from start to finish is both moving and horrifying. For RHCP fans it's good read, but for anyone who's been touched by addiction - in any form - this is essential.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best music biogs around right now 23 Jan 2006
Format:Paperback
I picked this up because I was mildly curious as to what laid behind that hyperactive stage persona. The book delivers and I couldn't put it down. It's at times a harrowing, bizarre and moving account of a life characterised by love, addiction and performer's drive.

It's refreshing to hear a life story involving addiction told with some regrets but little remorse. This approach gives another dimension to this book. What shines through is Anthony's ability to survive sometimes in the direst circumstances (whether they be of his own making or are massively helped along by others). This guy is a determined life force - his repeated attempts to get clean are set out in such a way that you get a sense that, whilst at times he may have been deeply despairing, he will never give up on himself. He's honest about his trials and is blessed with some extraordinary people around him who over the years have cared about (and for) him.

On a lighter note, the book interweaves the story behind some of the RHCPs most famous songs and gives a great insight into the recording processes the band have favoured over the years. There's also some nice glimpses of the various incarnations of the band over the years and the relationships that characterised each phase of their work. There's fun in the book too - the accounts of survival and antics in life before worldwide fame stand out.

I have loved his band for a very long time but I don't think you need to know anything about them, their performances or music to find this book interesting; it's a well thought out personal biography with a good account of his band's creative process.
