Four Jack-the Lads, sent by their workplace to a team bonding weekend are dropped off by their supervisor in the sticks and told to find their own way back to camp. As soon as they are left alone, the four go off in search of women and booze. It doesn't take them long to find the former, as they soon get lost and come across a mist enshrouded farmhouse complete with three comely lasses. It's a shame that the lads didn't watch the beginning of this film, or heeded the warnings from the locals in a nearby pub, as this trio of beauties are in fact daughters of an executed witch, cursed by their abusive father whom they murdered in self defence. With father in toe, trussed up and rotting in scarecrow garb, the three women soon reveal what they desire from the unwitting men. It's their bodies, not their minds. Well body parts, anyway!
This low budget British horror is a mixture of good and very bad. The scenes involving the scarecrow are quite atmospheric, as are the flashbacks. Although the four male protagonists talk a lot about having their wicked way with the sisters and after a night in the pub some snogging does indeed take place, this film is as far from erotic or steamy as you could possibly imagine. In some ways it resembles a cross between one of the 'Confessions Of..' series and a low budget Brit horror from the 70's. If the filmakers planned this film as a tribute to past Brit triumphs then they partially succeeded. I found all the relative innocence of the film quite refreshing in an age of post-modern irony.
However, these randy male protagonists are also the bane of this film. Such an unlikeable bunch they are, that it is very hard to actually care about any of their fates. Other negative points are some horrendous acting and torturous dialogue that make the film difficult to watch at times, especially as there is a complete lack of dramatic tension between the gruesome, enjoyable murder scenes. Of the performances, Marysia Kay, a low budget Scream Queen probably comes off best as Vanessa.
So to be honest not a particularily good horror film, but one it is impossible to dislike. The Scar Crow can be quite entertaining at times, but you will have to sit through quite a lot of filler to find those good moments. More 'Carry On Cornfield' than 'Dark Night Of The Scarecrow'. I bet they had a real hoot making the film though, and well done on this little film getting a major release. 3 out of 5.
