Collected edition of the sci-fi horror trilogy, about a disparate breed of telepaths operating on the fringes of a hostile human society. In 'Scanners' (1981), director David Cronberg introduces the concept of the group of psychics, nicknamed 'scanners' for their ability to read minds, who can also induce massive brain haemorrhaging in their subjects by locking into their nervous system. Stephen Lack plays Cameron, a 'good' scanner sent out by a team of doctors to track down the psychics who are using their powers for evil purposes, and who are led by Cameron's brother, Darryl Revok (Michael Ironside). In 'Scanners 2' (1991), a corrupt police commander (Yvan Ponton) decides to use the scanners to help take over the city, convincing evil scientist Dr Morse (Tom Butler) to help him. Morse has plans to use a new mind-controlling drug on the telepaths, but has not reckoned with a rogue scanner who is determined to stop them. Finally, 'Scanners 3' (1993) sees young Helena Monet (Liliana Komorowska), a girl with exceptional telepathic abilities, become a deranged killer when she tries an experimental drug developed by her father, and who then uses her abilities to cut a murderous swathe to the top of his pharmaceutical company. On her quest to dominate the world, Helena takes over a television station, and the only man who can stop her is her scanner brother Alex, recently returned from honing his skills in a Thai monastery.

David Cronenberg's original Scanners movie is one of the true horror classics, the renowned "exploding head" scene particularly has influenced so many other movie makers.
Cronenberg's story of a very small group of people with the ability to use their minds to influence people as well as physically move them by force was novel, with sinister political powers trying to exploit their powers. The original movie also wins hands down with regards to cinematography, music and acting with a cast that includes Patrick McGoohan, Michael Ironside, Stephen Lack and Jennifer O'Neill.
As regards extras there's a documentary on Cronenberg and influential horror journalist Alan Jones contributes a brief critique as he does for each of the movies.
The two sequels, both directed by Christian Deguay, (not Guy Duguay as the booklet says) expand on moves to corrupt the use of Scanning powers.
The second movie sees a corrupt police official trying to use Scanners to forcibly impose a New Order on society.
The last movie sees Liliana Komorowska (at one time Mrs. Duguay) taking an experimental drug designed to suppress scanning powers but which actually increases them and mentally unbalances her.
I have to say that the last 2 movies have a little too much of the over-theatrical throwing the head to one side and looking askance to indicate when the powers are in full use, it often looks quite funny. The special effects on all these movies are pretty decent as well, the main villain's end in Scanners II is a standout.
At its current price this box-set is a great buy.

A number of individuals in North America are gifted (cursed?) with the power to scan, a form of intense ESP that not only makes them a danger to themselves and others, but also the whole world..

Hadn't seen these since the second Scanners film came out on video in the very early nineties. I remembered them being rather boring and never really understood what all the fuss was about. The third I'd never seen and the Anchor Bay boxset had sat on my shelf for years, I therefore decided it was high time I re~watched them. Here's the result:-

Scanners: A vagrant is netted by a secret government facility, due to his unique abilities as a scanner, and is there enlisted as a spy to bring down an underground scanner movement that is being led by a very dangerous megalomaniac who also happens to be an expert scanner. However the further he goes behind enemy lines and the deeper underground he goes, the more risky his new role becomes. With nothing seemingly as straight forward as it first seems...
I stand corrected. This is in fact an extremely good thriller/horror by Cronenberg with plenty of exciting set pieces and a really good overall feel. Ironside and Mcgoohan are superb in their roles and some of the effects, given it's age, work surprisingly well. The score is a little amateurish and the main lead, though likeable, is not the greatest actor but with those few niggles aside this is a neat little effort. 4.75/5

Scanners II: The New Order. A young veterinary student unleashes his dormant scanner powers and is quickly used by a corrupt policeman who's favourite hobbies appear to be the exploitation of scanners and Machiavellian leanings, used within local power politics.

I can only review Scanners as I haven't got round to watching the other two yet. Cronenberg at his legendary best and a career defining role from Michael Ironside Truth be told I only bought the DVD for Michael's performance. Solely on his reputation. And the reputation of the film. I just hope that the following two are equal to the original!
