Amazon.co.uk Review

Beautiful Scotswoman Catriona Hennessy knows that she must eventually marry and so decides that she requires a mild-mannered, biddable husband, a man who will agree to father a daughter to inherit Casphairn Manor and who will leave her free to manage her holdings without interference. Unfortunately, the spirit of the earth that protects the manor and its valley, the Lady of the Vale, has other plans. The Lady firmly tells Catriona that the man who shall father her children is none other than Richard Cynster, better known throughout the land as "Scandal". Richard is definitely not the mild-mannered man Catriona had in mind, and even worse, he's English. Although Catriona fights the command of the Lady, all she gets for her efforts is a headache.

The two unlikely lovers are thrown together in a cold Scottish castle by the reading of a last will and testament. And while Richard is wildly attracted to the lovely Scottish lady, marriage doesn't cross his mind until the will is read and he is compelled to consider the subject. Richard's restless search for family and home becomes focused on Catriona and any doubts he has are quickly erased by his already raging physical attraction to her. Convincing Catriona that they are well suited, however, is another matter entirely. Who will win this battle of wills--Richard or Catriona? And how will Richard resolve his need to protect and defend Catriona while leaving her free to fulfil her responsibilities to the Lady of the Vale?

Laurens's latest tale will impress readers with its intense sensuality, colourful Scottish scenery and strong, expertly drawn characters--from the hero and heroine down to the most minor member of the cast. Combine those elements with a competent plot, throw in an intriguing glimpse of ancient mother earth worship in the British Isles, and it all adds up to a novel well worth reading. --Lois Faye Dyer

Of the hundreds of books I've read, I very rarely give a 5 star rating...I think I would prefer to give this a 9 out of 10, but since that's not an option, I'm giving it five stars. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and got some belly laughs when the Cynaster family visits Scandal and Catriona en mas. The poor only child gets inundated with family. I like the story, and although I can commiserate with Mrs. Giggles that the Cynaster males have no obvious flaws, I think that's part of the charm. As escapest reading, once and a while its nice to read about strong males who are "perfect", that's part of the escape. Now, I wouldn't want that to be a trend and read it in every new book, but Mrs. Laurens does such a good job with these males that I think that's their appeal. No one believes that anyone like that exists, though we wish they did. I have but two small objections to the book, which might seem petty in the extreme. The first is the excessive usage of the word "humph". I think everyone "humphed", and a page was not complete without it. The other small critisism was the amount of times Scandal appreciated the "swing of" our heroine's "hips". I loved the romance scenes and the quality which gave Scandal pause as to whether this was reality or a dream. I also like the fact that they don't get caught up in the "misunderstanding" plot. They seem to, but work through it and get on with the story. Do not pass go, do not collect $200...go out and BUY THIS BOOK!!!

This is my favorite of the Bar-Cynster series. I loved Devil's Bride as well as A Rake's Vow, however Richard and Catriona in Scandal are mezmerizing. Richard has all the same perfect qualities as all the other Cynster men except to me he is sexier due to his vulnerability. He has no real place to call his own. Catriona being a witch also adds spice to the story. I fell in love with Richard and wanted to be Catroina. If you like a good story, sizzling, hot, lingering sex scenes then this book is a must read or if you are just a fan of those oh sooooooooo sexy Cynsters, then read this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT - another winner! 12 Dec 1999

Format:Mass Market Paperback
Wow! This third Cynster novel is definitely on a par with the first. The passion sizzles from start to finish between Richard and Catriona, as evident by the numerous sexy love scenes. The way that Richard was accepted into the running of Catriona's manor was thoroughly charming, especially as he kept his promise and didn't interfere until asked! What a perfect man! The idea of Catriona as a witch also worked very well, keeping her character strong enough to both come up with and carry out her original plan of conceiving Richard's child WITHOUT him having much to do with any of it! For a young, Regency virgin the whole idea would have been beyond anyone of a less determined disposition! This is yet another book of Stephanie's which I shall keep and re-read on a regular basis. Highly recommended.

2.0 out of 5 stars OK, but other books in series were better 14 Feb 1999

Format:Mass Market Paperback
"Devil's Bride," Stephanie Laurens' first book, made me a fan. I enjoyed "A Rake's Vow," although I felt it lacked the ingredients I so enjoyed in "Devil's Bride" -- great love scenes without page after page of "he thinks, she thinks." After "Scandal's Bride," I'm starting to wonder about this author. I'm not sure if she's getting bad advice from an editor or what, but she needs to go back to her first book and compare. "Scandal's Bride" has too much "he thinks, she thinks," and too few detailed love scenes. An overall decent book, but if you haven't read Stephanie Laurens before, get "Devil's Bride" and skip this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth waiting for 17 Feb 1999
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I read the series out of order, I read A Rakes Vow first then Devil's Bride. I couldn't wait for this book to come out. I was glad to see that Stephanie Laurens didn't have Scandal bump into his beloved like Devil and Vane did. It was a different path for Scandal, he married her then learned to love her and so did Catriona. The love scenes weren't overpowering. I Can't wait to see how Ms. Laurens sets up Demon.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's no Scandal how good this is .... 21 Mar 2013
Format:Paperback
A tale of witchcraft and love in the Lowlands of Scotland.

It contains some delightful moments, and I particularly loved the bit where she drugs him (amazing what you can get away with in an historical novel.

The Cynsters' discending en masse was also a delightful moment.

I borrowed this from the local library, but will get it for me Kindle at some point .... a totally bewitching and a 4 star ***

5.0 out of 5 stars Candy for the brain! 11 Jun 1999
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Stephanie Laurens name should be right up there with Amanda Quick, Julie Garwood, and Catherine Coulter. Her 'Bar Cynster' men are deliciously appealing. Wit and joi de vie reign in the Regency novel and along with her contemperaries above, Stephanie does justice to the period. Her characters are well defined and very sensual. If you want to read a book about real men in the real world than do not read any historical or period romance. However, if your brain has a sweet tooth and you want to give it some candy, well then, read one of Stephanie's books. By the way, only the Bar Cynster men believe they're flawless. That is what makes them so appealing. We all know they're not, but, we are willing to put up with them just like Stephanie's heroines.
