More About the Author

Ever wondered what really happens at celebrity parties on London's showbiz circuit? During my time as a showbiz reporter on The Sun, I found out. the good news for you is that I share it in my debut novel Scandalous. It's fiction but, well, an awful lot is based on my experiences. Before my liver packed in, I gave up the life of a full-time party girl and now I'm more three-quarters night owl. I'm freelance but still have a weekly opinion column which I love in the Scottish Sun, I'm a regular pundit on the likes of Lorraine on ITV1 and Sky News as well and love presenting on radio having hosted talk shows. And of course, there's my wee baby (nope, not gone down that route though one day it would be lovely) Scandalous. My mum went silent on the other end of the phone when I told her I had a book deal with Penguin before saying: 'Darling I'm so proud. It's just, that's not really what people from Dundee do - write books.' I'm a proud redhead, live in London and Scotland and I blame my mix of Irish and Scottish genes for my inability to leave a party before last orders. Or have a diet coke at a free bar - or any bar come to think of it. I hope you enjoy my story of two sisters on very different sides of the fame game - one a redheaded showbiz reporter (I know, a stretch of the imagination) and her sister Lucy who s dating Britain's most eligible bachelor. As for bits of the book based on my experiences, I couldn't possibly say as I'm far too discreet. Ok, I'm not. At all. The part where Max wets her pants in front of Tom Cruise? It happened to me. The opening scene in which Max climbs a 12ft canvas wall to get into the VIP section of a premiere? That was me at the premiere of Master and Commander. Shaving of legs during a date which resulted in him nearly fainting? Not me actually, my best friend. All the bits you'd say 'that can't have happened' most probably did. I've interviewed the likes of Sean Connery, Angelina Jolie and Kylie Minogue and if you meet me in a pub, buy me a drink and I'll tell you the stories all night. If you do enjoy Scandalous please, please get in touch through my website which has my email on the home page and let me know what you think. For me, getting your feedback is the best part of having my book published. I'm always happy to sign a copy if you send a SAE too- maybe buy one for a friend, sister, daughter or mum as a stocking-filler for Christmas and I can personalize it. Likewise, I'll always try to get back to you if you are after advice on writing or working in the media. Lots of love, Martel x

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Chick Lit 4 Jun 2010
By C. Rucroft VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
When I first started this, I wasn't expecting great things, with the writer being a showbiz reporter. But, heck, the synopsis sounded great, so I gave it a go.
And I'm so glad I did. Read this in three days (I couldn't put it down). The plot raced along and was really exciting - I couldn't wait to see what would happen next. There were a lot of characters, but they all brought something different to the story.
The reason it lost a star, was mainly because I got sick of all the name dropping. Every two minutes we were being introduced to a new celebrity or a brand name. It just got a bit tedious after a while - it wasn't really necessary.
This book is definately worth a read. I'm not pretending it's the best writing in the world, but it is a great chick lit read. I really enjoyed it and look forward to the author's next offering.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a brilliant read! 19 April 2010
I loved this book!!! Its a real page turner and a great insight into the showbiz world. This new writer's first book has it all - there's glamour, fashion, romance, sex, lots of laughs. It even brought a tear to my eye... I think everyone will find a character they can relate to. Definitely worth buying and can't wait for Martel's next book. My advice: buy it NOW!

5.0 out of 5 stars Scandalous 22 Feb 2012
I have to admit to being a celeb gossip novel fan. Knowing that this book was written by an esteemed showbiz journalist that I've even seen talking about celebs on the telly meant I could be sure I was in for a revealing treat.
Although it's aimed at women, I reckon there's enough dirty stuff in there to keep the blokes entertained - and the whole thing is a genuine insight into how the world of celebrity actually works!
Can't wait for the second book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not that scandalous... 3 Jun 2010
By Chloe S "Chick Lit Chloe" TOP 500 REVIEWER
This is Martel Maxwell's debut novel, and what a good one it is. Martel used to a journalist/showbiz reporter for The Sun, so I did wonder when I was reading this book how much of this is based on Martel's real life experience with celebrities because some of the stuff that happens in the book is pretty outrageous and would be great if it was real! The cover of the book is pretty glam, with lovely bold pinks and purples that is sure to stand out on the shelf, and I think it'll be a hit for people who like a real - not necessarily a bonk buster of a story - but something a little more gritty and celeb oriented that your usual chick lit.

The characters of Max and Lucy are really great, and very likeable. When you have a plot that focuses mainly of 2 women, they have to be likeable because obviously the main audience of this book is going to be women too, and if the characters aren't right, the readers aren't going to like them either. Luckily, I really did like Max. She's a young showbiz columnist for a newspaper, and while she loves her job, she doesn't like some of the stuff that goes with it. I enjoyed her journey throughout the book and think the way Maxwell has portrayed her is really good because she is such a likeable character, despite her slightly brash exterior when she's in "job mode".

The setting for the book is London, but does flit around to other places at times too. I loved how Martel has drawn on her experiences as a journalist and this comes across in the book because of the confident way she writes about the job and Max as a character within her job. As I mentioned before, I'd love to know how many of these stories are based on things that have actually happened, and if any characters are based on real life celebs too!

4.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely loved it! Great summer read! 5 May 2010
In a nutshell: it's got all the scandal, sexiness and style of a chicklit, but with a bit more heart. It's definitely worth lazing on the beach with this summer. Enjoy!
