although the basic plot of the story (in theory) promises a lot of interesting twists and turns which are necessary if the two protagonists are to find happiness, this novel never really gets going. everything always seems to be the end of their love, or the new beginning. there is no real peak. i read the whole book in no time, mostly thinking "now it's gonna happen", "it" being the turning point of the story. it didn't. furthermore, one cannot help but be astounded at just how stupidly a human being can behave. most of the time, a child of eight would show more maturity and capacity of linear thought than our heroine, Nicole. of course, she is supposed to be unconventional, even somewhat wild, and madly in love, but i don't believe anyone can be so insensitive, emotionally insecure, willful and, well, just plain stupid. i am profoundly disappointed. after reading Brenda Joyce's phenomenal later novels, Splendor, The Finer Things, etc, i expected better.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not her best 23 July 1999

Format:Paperback
I love Brenda Joyce, but this book was barely warm compared to some of her other works like "The Conquerer" or "The Game." Yes, there was lots of scandal and propriety involved, but not enough steam to keep your interest. She can get alot juicier than this!

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent reading! 23 Aug 1998
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This is my favorite Brenda Joyce novel. Two people reluctantly drawn to one another by an attraction so strong that each is miserable in each other's company and when they are apart. For the hero is betrothed to another and our heroine was a dismal failure during her 'season'. But the heroine is strong, beautiful, intelligent and brutal enough to physically attack the hero, Hadrian, not once, but several times within the novel. Yes, the novel can be considered comical at times! I loved it and have yet to find it available for purchase (the copy I read was a library copy) and now I can order one of my favorite books on-line.
