Fourth in the "Regency Lords and Ladies Collection" series, 3 Feb 2009
This review is from: A Scandalous Lady: AND The Gentleman's Demand (Regency Lords and Ladies Collection) (Paperback)
This book contains two regency romances and is fourth in the series of Regency Romance double novels.
"A Scandalous Lady" by Francesca Shaw tells the story of the playboy Earl of Ashby who, captivated by beautiful actress Lysette Davide, makes a rash bet with his friends that he will make her his mistress. But Lysette has both a mind of her own, and a secret to hide.
Sophie Firle, the heroine of "The Gentleman's demand" by Megan Alexander, had eloped at seventeen to marry her sweetheart. But they not been married long when her husband is first apparently dismissed from the Revenue service after being framed for corruption, and then dies in an accidental fall.
But it turns out that her husband's disgrace was a ruse and his death no accident: he had still been working for the Revenue as an undercover agent, and had been murdered by smugglers. Sophie is offered a rich reward if she helps to catch them - by acting as bait ...
A couple of fairly reasonable regency novels. Not a patch on Georgette Heyer, let alone Jane Austen, but mildly amusing.
To date there are at least thirty volumes, each containing two novels, in the "Regency Lords and Ladies Collection" series. One minor niggle is that the front cover does not display either the series number (it's on the side) or the story titles, many of which have been published separately. So you if you are an avid collector of regency romances and don't want to buy a story you already have, you may need to be a little careful with this series. However, this should not present any serious difficulty.
The first half dozen books in the series contain the following twelve stories:
1) "The Larkswood Legacy" by Nicola Cornick, and "The Neglectful Guardian" by Anne Ashley
2) "My Lady's Prisoner" by Elizabeth Cree, and "Miss Harcourt's Dilemma" by Anne Ashley
3) "Lady Clairval's Marriage" by Paula Marshall, and The Passionate Friends by Megan Alexander
4) "A Scandalous Lady" by Francesca Shaw, and "The Gentleman's demand" by Megan Alexander
5) "A Poor Relation" by Joanna Maitland, and "The Silver Squire" by Mary Brendan
6) "Mistress or Marriage?" by Elizabeth Rolls, and "A Roguish Gentleman" by Mary Brendan

Both excellent stories., 29 Dec 2010

I can't really put too much more than has already been written, here is my review.
A scandalous lady had the leading lady risking her love and social life to support her family but managed to intrigue a handsome man who she herself was intrigued by. The story flowed and didn't have me thinking that it should of been wrapped up pages earlier.
The gentleman's demand was a darker plot, smugglers involved and high risks. Both worth a read and even a re-read.
Each story is about 280 pages long.

Regency Lords & Ladies Volume 4, 30 Mar 2009
This review is from: A Scandalous Lady: AND The Gentleman's Demand (Regency Lords and Ladies Collection) (Paperback)
As usual, this volume contains two stories:
A Scandalous Lady by Francesca Shaw:
"Playboy batchelor the Earl of Ashby had become enraptured with the unobtainable charms of beautiful actress Lysette Davide and made a wager with his friends: he would make her his mistress. But Lysette had a scandalous secret to hide and refused to belong to any man...."
The Gentleman's Demand by Meg Alexander:
"The dashing gentleman's demand put widow Sophie Firles's life in danger. Acting as bait to catch the smugglers who had murdered her husband, Sophie was promised a rich reward. But when the attrative stranger moved into her home to pose as her admirer, he proved to be remarkably convinving!"
Two very entertaining regency romances.
