Product Description

England, 1810: When Lady Gabriella Banning receives word that her half-brother, the Earl of Wickham, has died on his tea plantation in Ceylon, she faces the reality that she and her younger sisters, Claire and Elizabeth, are suddenly penniless. The family's riches will pass to the next male heir -- a distant cousin -- and the Banning sisters are doomed unless Gabby thinks fast.
Which she does. Pretending that Marcus is still alive, Gabby arranges beautiful Claire's London season. She'll keep up the pretense just long enough for Claire to marry a fabulously wealthy nobleman. But when a handsome gentleman arrives at the door and claims to be Marcus, Gabby's plan backfires. For if she exposes this mysterious stranger's deceit, she exposes her own. Bound by secrets and lies, Gabby and the roguish adventurer strike sparks off each other -- and soon London society is abuzz over the scandalous pair of "siblings" who appear to be falling in love....
With this beautifully rendered romance, bestselling author Karen Robards begins a sweeping series about three unforgettable sisters poised to take the ton by storm.

4.0 out of 5 stars A real Regency page-turner from Karen Robards. 19 April 2001
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
When Lady Gabriella Banning's unknown half-brother, the new Earl of Wickham, is shot dead in Ceylon, she and her impoverished sisters find themselves in a considerable pickle. With her hated cousin due to inherit the title, they will lose their home and have no money to launch her beautiful sister Claire on London society circa 1810. So Gabby does a deal with the devil, pretends her brother's still alive, and sets about spending his money on Claire's 'come-out' before anyone else learns the truth. But, uh-oh, when Gabby and her sisters arrive in London to do just that, there's a gorgeous bloke already there masquerading as the Earl. Of course, Gabby knows he's not her real brother, but if she tells anyone, her own gig's up too. Then she shoots him with his own pistol and things get really interesting. This is a wonderfully witty and wildly sexy historical romance with a feisty, resourceful heroine, a fabulous rogue of a hero and lots of scandalous situations to keep them butting heads - not to mention a few other parts of their anatomies. If there's one complaint, the story really doesn't go anywhere once the premise is established, and the ending is perfunctory to say the least, but frankly there's enough smouldering moments to ensure that doesn't really matter.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great story, done in by the dreaded 350-page rule 10 July 2001
By Suzanne B. Kelly - Published on
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Ever wonder why all romances are about the same size? Publisher's everywhere have somehow decided that readers cannot keep their attention on a romance if it runs over 350 pages. For some stories, this arbitrary stopping point works OK, but this is one of those stories where page 350 comes like a slap in the face.
Up to the final chapters, it's a roaring good tale: a ne'er-do-well, mysterious hero, a repressed, highborn spinster gambling for very high stakes, an unsolved murder. Lady Gabriella must make her way through society, find a husband for her achingly eligible sister, and keep some very important information completely under wraps, all by the side of a charming rogue who alternately helps and hinders.
Then, with the quickness of lightning, the villian is exposed, the plot twists neatly unravelled, and everyone lives happily ever after. Not only is this ending rushed in the extreme, but it leaves all sorts of unanswered questions. I can only hope that book 2, the middle sister's story, clears up some of my questions--but that in turn will deprive this poor dear of her measely share of pages (I'm sorry dear, but we need another fifty pages for your sister; you have been demoted to a novella...). In short, a great story, seemingly cut off at the knees.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Heart-Tugging Romance 9 May 2001
By A Customer - Published on
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I am a huge fan of Karen Robards and this is among her best ever. The romance is fun (hot) and the emotions are beautifully expressed. These people aren't perfect but you care deeply about them. I read this in one sitting and then proceeded to re-read the passages about the dancing several times. Sometimes there is too little focus on the sex or too litte focus on the emotions. This time, Karen Robards got it JUST RIGHT! Can't wait to see the next installments!

3.0 out of 5 stars An acceptable read 14 May 2001
By Cynthia Woolf - Published on
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I would rate this book only acceptable. The relationship between Nick and Gabby is never really fully developed and after making love one time, they are suddenly in love only to have Nick "disappear". Sorry, it just doesn't wash. The ending was good but was thrust upon us too suddenly. Suddenly, Nick finds the bad guy, suddenly Nick returns, suddenly the book ends.

4.0 out of 5 stars THIS is why I read Robards! 1 Feb 2006
By K. Rowland - Published on
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This book started off slow, but then suddenly I was sucked into the story and could not put it down!

The story is about two people who need each other to keep their own scandal from being found out. Mostly, it is a romance ~ a very enjoyable one that blossoms very sweetly. I hate when characters are stubborn and won't admit to themselves or each other how they feel. This wasn't the case in SCANDALOUS. I liked how our heroine wasn't a perfect woman and I liked how our hero thought she was.

My only complaint, to echo other reviewers, was the last few chapters. I felt Robards could have ended the story a lot smoother without some unnecassary scenes. Regardless, this is worth reading. :)

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Beginning to a Series... 17 Mar 2001
By Abbys - Published on
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Read the AMAZON synopsis and book description above for book summarization.
In addition to that:
This is the first book of Karen Robards BANNING SISTERS SERIES. SCANDALOUS is Gabriella's story, the eldest sister. The second book is IRRESISTIBLE, story of the second sister, Claire Banning (there is no exact date out for this book yet). She was described as the most beautiful of the three sisters and most charming. She was THE big boom during her coming out season. So, I can't wait to see who she ended up falling in love with. I am assuming that the third book would be about Elizabeth or Beth as she is called by her family. She is the youngest and the most mischievous, spunky and witty. Now, that too would be a fun read. No title or date out for that book yet.
Gabriella is most certainly one of my many historical favorite heroines of all times. Gabriella is the most practical and sufficient of the three sisters. She has courage, intelligence and spunk. Her character was fully developed and detailed that you just can't help but like her. Admire her. Karen Robards wrote about Gabby's inner self, her thoughts, her past, even her fears and dreams, that is why I was a bit disappointed in Nick's character development. I didn't know much about him (only few facts and figures) even in the end when confessions were told. I guess it is practical to described less of him considering his hidden or secret identity, however, I wish there was more of Nick's past, perhaps his fears and/or dreams, to make him more convincing or more real. Nick is often times away for days and I don't know where or what he does other than a quick summary of him looking for Marcus' murderer. I also prefer the hero and the heroine to spend more time together, developing their affection for each other. Getting to know each other. In this book, Karen Robards pretty much blended the suspense/mystery with romance which sadly to say, I couldn't help but want more (more romance, more of the H/H together). BUT Like I said, I understand it is necessary for Karen Robards to distant Nick's character in order for the suspense and thrill to be absorbed by the reader, that is why I rate this book a 4 stars. Perhaps in the 2nd book of this series, KR will make it up by adding a lot of updates of Nick & Gabby.
The initial plot of this book is actually very intriguing. The mystery is exciting. Some humor and a lot of detailed description of the Banning sisters. I guess you can say that this book is a delightful beginning to the Banning Sisters Series. Yes, I find this book somewhat slow in the beginning. But as soon as the story picks up, you wouldn't want to put it down.
I've always enjoy KR's book and this is not an exemption, I'm certainly looking forward to reading Claire and Beth's story as soon as it is out in the market.
