Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

The 16th of Lindsey Davis's fluent, funny Roman thrillers, Scandal Takes a Holiday puts official informer Falco to work searching for a missing journalist in the bustle of Rome's port, Ostia. As everyone keeps telling Falco, there are no pirates any more--the emperors put a stop to them for good--and yet somehow the old pirate havens of Illyria and Cilicia are just as prosperous as ever and rich, retired old men from both regions seem to fetch up in Ostia, along with gangsters, kidnappers and assassins.

The usual members of Falco's extended family are along for the investigation--the fact he has had to hire a seaside apartment does not escape those anxious to escape a Roman summer--and as always much of the book's charm comes from Falco's endless romance with his clever, posh wife Helena. This is also the book in which Falco finally meets the one uncle that no-one ever talks about; this is not one of the most profound of the Falco books (which can sometimes add seriousness and poignancy to their other virtues) but it is an entertaining and intelligent puzzle that, as always, tells us things we didn't know about Roman life. --Roz Kaveney

Review

"This is the sixteenth Falco novel, and they have built up a large following. It is not hard to see why. They are amiable and unpretentious...The research that has gone into them allows the externals of Roman life to be presented in an evocative way. Yet the interior life of the characters remains reassuringly modern...Philip Marlowe in a toga."

As Good As Ever 29 Nov 2004
By J. Chippindale TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
Lindsey Davis has weaved another spell for her reader. Falco is back at his best surrounded by (and hindered) by his family. there are many authors writing crime in this format and most of them do it very well, but Lindsey Davis is still the best. There is something about Falco that endears him to the reader. The sights and sounds of Ancient Rome leap off the page at you. I have not said anything about the plot of the book, why spoil it. JUST READ THE BOOK, YOU'LL LOVE IT.

Great fun 22 Jun 2004
Format:Hardcover
Once more Marcus Didius Falco, informer, sleuth, husband, father, and member of a vast and annoying family ("typical Italian") is out on a work assignment, this time in Ostia, the harbour of Ancient Rome. As usual, the plot is gripping and the story well told (I freely admit that I am a Falco aficionado), and as usual I am impressed by how well Ms. Davis researched the historical background of her story (pirates in the Meditteranean).

This is Lindsey Davis at her best. Another Falco novel with all the depth of knowledge about Roman society in 77AD that we have become accustomed to. As well as a fascinating insight into Roman society it is also a great mystery who-done-it, with missing scribes, mysterious uncles, "retired" pirates, kidnapping and a chaotic family life all vying for the reader's attention. If you have never read a Lindsey Davis' Falco novel this is a good one to start with and eventually you will, like me, wind up with all 20 of her novels set in ancient Rome and all its many Provinces. A "must-read". Get it and enjoy.
