4.0 out of 5 stars Very, very funny and entertaining! 19 Jun 1999
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This book was hilarious. I couldn't stop laughing. Amanda Quick does seem to follow a formula in her writing but I still seem to enjoy her books. This one in particular was enjoyable because of her sense of humor throughout. My daughter came in to see why I was laughing so much. Don't miss reading this book for it is very entertaining.

Scandal is my absolute FAVORITE Amanda Quick book! Both Emily and Simon are great: witty, protective, sensitive, & endearing! Both the dialogue and the storyline are exciting!

4.0 out of 5 stars A charming read 18 Feb 2001
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This is the first book I read by Amanda Quick and it got me hooked. The book is charming and I liked the characters of Emily and Simon. Quick manages to make the characters of Emily and Simon likable despite her apparant niavite and his high handedness.

Amanda Quick is probably the best Regency writer of all time. This particular genre can be very enjoyable but the main problems with at are that they are often based on the same premises-- damsel in distress, though she is not the usual "milksop" of the time; rich, dark, strong hero who is convinced that love does NOT exist, goofy house staff, ridiculous relatives. Oh, and don't forget the fops of the ton.

Amanda Quick's actual writing is very good, not strewn with too many "love" words but enough to make you anticipate what will happen next. Yet all the books that she writes under this pseudonym seem to be variations on the same theme. Maybe the hero is somewhat taller, stronger, shorter, thinner, bespectacled, scarred. But he's always handsome. And down-to-earth. Her heroines are all cute and spunky, with her little obsessions, such as books, metaphysics, or ancient history. (All of you faithful Quick readers know what I mean.) And the girl is either a virgin or a chaste widow, but the first or second time the hero tries to sleep with her, she complies willingly, even if she doesn't trust him very much. I wish Quick would change the plot line sometimes, allow the heroes and heroines more gaping faults because they are often indistinguishable from each other.

This one was not one of Quick's better books. She seems to be doing what most writers, particularly those in romance, tend to do once they gain name recognition-- use the tried-and-true formulas and just change the names, a scene or two, and, TA-DA a bestseller! This heroine is, as another reviewer put is, always "spouting" about metaphysical, er, junk. No woman with any intelligence would let herself get THAT carried away by metaphysical bonds.... 4.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing 19 Sep 2007
Format:Paperback
Emily Faringdon is spontaneous, intelligent, naïve. Simon Traherne is strong, cool, able, calculating. When put together, Emily finds a person that she can trust; Simon finds that Emily's trust forces him to behave in a way he thinks is uncharacteristic of him. Emily is not stupid, maybe she sees in Simon qualities that he has but that he thinks will be harmful if he admits he has them. Emily can run away from Simon in anger and disappointment, but when he shows up (in anger even he), she jumps gladly at him and expects him to be able to manage everything, which he to his surprise commences to do.

Simon must enjoy being the object of such trust; he also finds that Emily will stand up for him, which nobody has done in his life. On the other hand, Simon always eventually lives up to Emily's expectations, as absurd as they first seem, and he must be the first person in Emily's life to do this. Emily's brothers are nice but childish, and her father is a spendthrift who manipulates Emily so as to have her at his beck and call all her life. Simon is one who carries himself and could carry several others, would he so wish.

For some, Emily's flights to the world of romance and make-believe might seem exasperating. Not so to Simon, who is allowed to show a keen, quite well-hidden sense of humour when he relates to this side of Emily's person. The humour in this book is mostly in Simon's attitude towards Emily's romanticism, and Emily's sudden turn-abouts. I find it very refreshing. It is also very nice to find in a book a sort of humour that isn't spelled out to the reader. This must be the reason why I have read this book several times.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun - a good intro to Amanda Quick 27 Mar 1999
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I'd never read Amanda Quick's books before. This was the first. I thought the characters were great with their eccentricities. I found them endearing in their own ways and regretted when the book ended. Her characters and plots are not the same-old/same-old of most romance novels. The ladies actually have brains, which is refreshing to read after all the brainless damsels-in-distress in many of the other romance novels available. It is fun to be involved in the adventure

5.0 out of 5 stars I love Scandal 27 Sep 2010
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I've read this book about 8 times and know I'll read it many, many more times. It's witty and entertaining and whilst it's light to read, the characters are well-rounded and their experiences keep you turning the pages in quick succession. Classic Quick, at her best.
