Not having read them, I cannot compare this to other biographies of this giant of the 20th century. At any rate, it is very long and detailed, often depending on Solzhenitsyn's own writings. It was written during his lifetime, long before his death, and he seems not to have objected. Anyone interested in the Soviet Union and in man's inhumanity to man needs to read this book. The biographer is of course fluent in Russian. The building of this biography took a great deal of effort and dedication, and the result was worth it.
