Brought this for my 4 year old son xmas. Well that was the excuse as I always wanted my own scalextric set as a kid. It was so simple to set up as you slot the tracks together and you just need to plug in the controllers and mains. There are enough bends and tracks to make endless combinations of circuits. There are settings on the controller which adjust how far you can press the button to increase the speed, however, didn't have to turn this down as my son found it easy to control on full power with the occasional going off track by getting too excited while racing. I use the slower setting for my 2 year old daughter but struggles at time to hold the button down.
We have played hours till the tyres starts to pick up dust around it and needs a little rubbing off to clean. Not sure if it helps or not but we became quite competitive by cleaning our tyres often to gain more traction round the corners at higher speed.
More to the important aspect - I found the tracks to be strong, made of plastic and unlikely to snap unless you do it deliberately. My only concerns would be the part that clicks or join together when putting the track together. There's been mention from other reviewers that the cars lack power or stop working, which nearly put me off from buying this. I am wondering if they just need to replace the guide blade contact at the bottom of the car. This round thing keeps the car on course and more importantly feeds the car with electricity. I had to buy replacements as we play so often that the metal elements wear out quickly and lose the contact to the metal section on the track. Anyway, as long as you change the guide blade and the tracks are connected properly, I don't have any issues with loss of power. Link for the blade(only a few quid)

The cars are great - well detailed and look exactly like the characters. They are made of plastic and they go very quick round the track. We broke Francesco front wing as it zoom off the track and crashed. Still works but unless you want metal cars, not much I can see improving. The cars are expensive to replace but we brought an additional 2 cars (Audi TT and Porsche) to play with. If I had more space, I would buy more tracks. Hope this review helps..
