If you teach piano then get this book. If you are taking your grade 5 piano or above then get this book. If you are a pianist taking AS or A2 level music then get this book. Even if you are a casual pianist who wants to know more then get this book.

Yes, there are scales, chords, arpeggios and cadences but there is so much more.

1) Scales are:
In parallel motion,
Contrary motion,
Parallel motion in 3rds & 6ths,
Arps & dom 7th arps,
All triads
Primary triads
Plagal & Perfect Cadences

2) This will also help you with your theory grades and aural tests. Here's the stuff:
Circle of 5ths
Order of sharps and flats
How chords are 'built' and how inversions work.
The V7 chord and how the dominant 7th works
Degrees of the scale - 'tonic, supertonic, mediant, subdominant etc'
How major scales are 'built'
How relative minors work and and the differences / similarities with their relative major
Intervals
Primary triads
Diminished sevenths
Guide to fingering

The Lost Chord 8 Sep 2011
Format:Paperback
At the tender age of 60, I can't play the piano. The left hand plays octaves and the right hand plays chords, but the results are insipid and uninspiring. Something was needed to help me understand how to put together chord sequences in a meaningful way. At the same time, I wanted to know the technical side of building arpeggios without them interfering with melody lines. Scales, Chords, Arpeggios and Cadences: Complete Book, answers all these questions and has already given me some tips on improving my playing by using fingering exercises. It's a great book and well worth the purchase.

I must confess to not having used this book extensively, but upon early impressions it seems to provide a great resource for the burgeoning pianist. I have found it to be more complete than the ABRSM volumes but perhaps more daunting. That said, it is arranged clearly (with all scales and arpeggios listed under their respective key) and all the fingering is provided. A very reasonable price for a detailed and useful tome.
