For awhile now I've been trying to find another Twilight. A love story, an adventure and a fantasy to take me away. Yesterday I found it when I scrolled through the pages that unlocked the the story of Vivian Blue in SCALES by Acacia Awai. Never have I dreamed of a world where dragons do exist. But these dragons walk amongst us with their powers and abilities, leaving humans none the wiser.
Our story starts with one particularly yummy dragon, Hatch Lancaster, when he is sent to Maui on a secret mission. So secret even he has no idea why he is sent there. "You'll know it when you see it." is the only cryptic clue he has to go on. There in Maui is where he meets our main lady Vivian Blue and he is instantly enthralled. Not only does her beauty captivate, but also the fact that he knows she has no idea that she too is a dragon amongst humans.
The mystery unfolds as Blue finds out who and what she really is. So many questions, too little answers. Hatch tries to protect Blue from unknown dangers that lurk. Not knowing who to trust and who to rely on. The only thing that is certain is the new found love they have found is literally set in the palms of their hands, and that may make all the difference.
Throw away everything you think you may know about dragons! Awai has skillfully blended reality and fantasy on this new take on dragon kind. I found the book fast paced and page turning. I could not put it down. Not only do I love the main characters of Hatch and Blue, but the supporting cast help to solidify my love for the story.
Like all great series this book ends with me wanting more... I can't wait to read the sequel and continue my journey through dragon kind.

This mystery/love story begins with a handsome Hatch Lancaster, who soon meets the stunning Vivian Blue (even the names suck you right in). I melted as I turned the pages and fell in love with the main characters as well as their friends and family. Every time you think you can't fall any deeper in, you melt just a little bit more. I have not loved a book this much since the Twilight series, truly...and I have looked.
The idea of Dragons living in the human world, looking like humans is a truly organic idea. Having the two lovely main characters fall in love with one another in front of your eyes is such an amazing thing, especially when set to the tune of the Hawaiian Islands. Aside from the obvious love story is the not so obvious mystery of the "new Dragon", Vivian Blue's powers. Learning about her strange new powers as she does is very cool. The author writes as if you are right there with her, which is why I could not put this book down. The brilliant fantasy worlds she creates feels so real, I wanted to go looking for The Panther Hotel on Maui, and the "tunnel" to Dragonkind.
The detail she puts into the Dragons SCALES and what they mean will almost bring you to tears. The thought involved with what powers each of them has, and the back story will leave you begging for more. I can't wait to see what she comes up with for the next book and I hope it's soon because I am just itching to see what happens.
This book gave me that adrenaline feeling throughout....love story to action, comedy to power issues to discoveries, to family togetherness to victorious moments. I know that may sound funny, but, when you find a good book, it's love. And for me, this book just is......my hope scale....I won't ruin it for you, so to understand what that means exactly you will just have to read this fantastic book for yourself!

I'm not ordinarily a reader of fantasy, but I found this story a real page-turner.
