CD Description

* Hot on the heels of well-received projects by the Contours and Marv Johnson, Kent is delighted to bring you the altogether-splendid results of a further dip into the 1960s Motown archives, with the first ever CD by collector favourites the Monitors.

* Although they consistently failed to achieve the promotion and success that was afforded to some of their more famed labelmates, the Monitors were among the finest groups to record for Berry Gordy's company during its golden era.

* Led by the soulful tenor of future Temptations member Richard Street, the three-boy, one-girl quartet was never among Motown's big chart hitters, but the comparatively few recordings the Monitors made in almost seven years with the company were and remain of the highest quality - and each of their five released singles deserved considerably more chart action than they got.

* "Say You!" - named for the group's V.I.P 45 - rounds up the Monitors' lone 1970 album for Motown's Soul label and adds a further 12 killer 60s tracks from the Detroit vaults, 10 of which are being released for the first time here.

* Across its contents you will also find a version of every Monitors A- and B-side, most of them being reissued in stereo for the first time.

* The package features a wealth of label shots and rare ephemera, with a sleeve note by Motown uberfan Keith Hughes that incorporates the recent reminiscences of Richard Street about his time as "head Monitor".

Following Ace Records excellent collections by The Satintones, The Contours, and Marv Johnson, comes this 26 track Motown feast of tasty treats from The Monitors.

The group has a complicated pre-history but Motown expert Keith Hughes has unpicked the threads to weave a coherent tale of the group's rise and fall. Prior to being The Monitors, the group was known as The Majestics and there are three early tracks by The Majestics here which will delight fans of the early R&B sounds of Detroit. The group's sole album is present and includes a storming version of Jay & The Techniques' Baby Make Your Own Sweet Music. The album is literally crammed with top-notch Motown sounds, including their five singles, none of which was released in the UK. This was a terrible oversight on the part of Tamla Motown as the Monitors would certainly have scored chart hits given half the chance. Two non-album B-sides finish the set, the CD ending with the Northern Soul favourite Don't Put Off 'Til Tomorrow What You Can Do Today.

There are 12 previously unreleased tracks. Cover versions from the vaults include Johnny Rivers' Poor Side Of Town and Motown chestnuts Too Busy Thinking About My Baby - produced by Norman Whitfield - Show Me You Can Dance and You're So Fine And Sweet - the latter a Smokey Robinson co-composition and co-production. Smokey certainly captured something special in the Monitors. One can only wonder what would have happened if Holland, Dozier and Holland had worked with them.

The song Crying In the Night has been out before, but this is a better alternate mix of that dance favourite. Of the previously unreleased songs, the strongest are My Love Grows Stronger produced by Richard Morris, I'm In Love With You Baby produced by Clarence Paul, and a stunning track called It Only Happens When Love Is Gone produced by Henry Cosby.

Motown's habit of plucking singers from lesser groups to fill holes in front-line groups is what brought the group's Motown run to an end, when lead singer Richard Street was taken to be a part of The Temptations.

This isn't the complete Monitors set but you can find additional tracks on each of the Cellarful Of Motown collections and there is a stunning track by the group hidden away on the deluxe edition of Marvin Gaye's Let's Get It On double CD.

For anyone who loves Motown, this CD will be a delight. Northern Soul fans will be over the moon. Soul fans will be impressed with the mid-tempo tracks and the ballads.

With detailed track by track annotations and contributions from lead singer Richard Street himself, Keith Hughes' essay is an essential chapter in the history of Motown.

Motown Treasures 9 Jun 2011
By Dexter
The Monitors were considered to be one of the second string acts at Motown but there was nothing second rate about their performances. They may never have made the big time but they should have. As usual with Motown there was too much talent producing excellent recordings to give every act the proper recognition and promotion they deserved. So the Monitors slipped under the radar.

Tracks 1 - 12 are from the 'Greetings! We're The Monitors' album and include 'Since I Lost You Girl', 'Say You' & 'Time Is Passin' By' which are Motown classics that Motown doesn't even know are classics! 13 - 24 are all previously unissued tracks and are as good as anything from the original album. My favourites are 'It Only Happens When Love Is Gone' which I think would have been a hit, 'My Love Grows Stronger' & 'Show Me You Can Dance'. The final two tracks are 'b' sides one of which 'Don't Put Off Till Tomorrow What You Can Do Today' sounds very familiar but does not appear to have been recorded by anyone else!

As is always the case with an Ace release they have compiled a most informative essay about the Monitors. The group had a very complex history of different names and group members the best known is of course the wonderful Richard Street who went on to join the Temptations.

Thanks to all who were involved in making this release a reality.

What a collection Monitors soul classics! Contains the complete greetings album. If you're a fan this is one for your collection. Lot of hard to get tracks featured. Comes complete with informative booklet about the history of the group. This is an authorised Motown recording released through Kent Soul.
