3.0 out of 5 stars The best book for travellers but with some problems., 24 May 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Say it in Sinhala (Paperback)
This is the best book I have found to help travellers learn Sinhala, much better than the lonely planet phrase book. However that said I think it would be difficult for anyone to learn Sinhala using this book.

There are two main problems with it: firstly the pronunciation guide is not that clear and with an absence of any tapes it's impossible for the student to be sure that his pronunciation is correct; secondly, the grammar explanations seem to be designed for a serious linguist. Terms such as dative case and existential verbs make the language seem daunting and inaccessible. A more simplified approach would have been better.

That said this is all there is and could certainly help a traveller while they are in the country and have the possibility to try out their Sinhala and get some feedback.
