Product Description

Synopsis

This book will help ease any anxiety in using the world's most widely spoken language - Chinese. It not only provides commonly used words and phrases in putonghua - the official language of the People's Republic of China - it also offers translations in Cantonese and Shanghainese. This comprehensive guide shows you how to pronounce the words and speak the language the way a local would. This book is a necessary handbook for visitors not only from non-Chinese speaking countries, but also for those who do speak Chinese, as it provides terms and phrases specific to China.

it would seem handy these days to have an english-mandarin-cantonese-shanghainese phrase book. unfortunately, this one isn't it.

the layout is neither clear nor user friendly. Each page has about a dozen words or phrases translated into all the languages. this is pretty useless because it is unlikely you'll need to say "rice" in 4 different dialects at the same time. the graphics are distracting and the colour background on most pages makes it too dark to read.

the chinese text is in simplified characters which makes it of limited use for travel to hong kong, taiwan etc. to be fair, this is made apparent in the cover blurb. the cantonese romanisation does not include tone markings (!) and the shanghainese romanisation is strange - why not just use yale or IPA throughout?

although i rate it only 2 stars, i would like the publisher to have another go for a second edition. it would be a handy resource. Perhaps have an english menu at the front and a chinese one in the back, so to look up by stroke order.
