This is the first in a series involving Meredith Mitchell, who left England some years previously to escape from a failed relationship, and Chief Inspector Markby, a fairly gloomy policeman who lacks purpose in his life outside his job. Having said that, there's really not that much involvement going on in this story, but I imagine that changes as the series of books goes on. I have yet to discover that, but will definitely be reading more of the series.
In this book, Meredith comes back to England to attend her god-daughter's wedding; daughter of her cousin Eve, an actress who may have passed her career peak, and who has three failed marriages behind her. Eve and Meredith are fairly "chalk and cheese" but family has its bonds, and Meredith is determined to do the right thing by the family and by Sara, her god-daughter. Unfortunately, Sara's fiance is not all that Meredith could desire; and the village in which Eve and Sara are living seems, to Meredith's thinking, "soulless". What more could go wrong? Well, quite a lot actually - murder, intrigue and mystery don't take long to arrive to upset the fragile calm of the village, and Meredith finds herself, somewhat unwillingly, helping CI Markby in the unravelling of some fairly unsavoury home village truths.
This is a really good novel; the characters, the story itself, and the pace rattle along really well - I was engrossed from beginning to end. I liked the characters of Meredith and Markby - both strong-minded and independent characters who have their own lives, and who slowly start to find a glimmer of liking for each other.
Thoroughly recommended to anyone looking for a good English whodunnit, or a novel with just a really good story to keep the reader intrigued and interested to the last page.
