Review

"'Some of us have a new ambition - to be the next Sandy Balfour' Sunday Times 'An extraordinary memoir... a positive page turner... A mesh of journeys and destinations, politics and romance, it touches what is beyond words' The Times 'A little gem... The book adds up to more than a sum of its parts and lingers in the memory long after the final page' Val Gilbert, Sunday Telegraph"

Product Description

This delightful book explores the world of the cryptic crossword clue, a place where nothing is quite as it seems. From reflections on his children's musical tastes (might ABBA be an Old Testament citation?) to veiled digs at Labour's foreign policy ('What could be subtler during search for weapon!' 7, 4), each of Sandy Balfour's perfectly proportioned essays is a joyful investigation of these devilishly difficult puzzles and the life they punctuate. Part notebook, part diary, part entertainment, "I Say Nothing (3)" is the perfect gift for any crossword enthusiast.

Format:Hardcover
I thoroughly enjoyed Sandy Balfour's earlier book "Pretty Girl in Crimson Rose" (which I recommend wholeheartedly) which interwove autobiographical stories with his growing love of cryptic crosswords.

This book is more a series of reflections, too short to be called essays, which he links with crossword clues (and solutions) that particularly appeal to him. While this is entertaining in small doses, and certainly a book to be dipped into rather than read in long sessions, it doesn't work nearly as well. I imagine if you are a real cryptic crossword addict then you might enjoy the mental challenge of these short 'pensées', but it lacks the cohesiveness and flow of his previous book.
