How long should a story be? As long as it takes and not one word more. SAY MY NAME is a novella -- shorter than a novel but longer than a short story. I read it in half an hour, I think, but I have to admit I lost track of time.
The alphabet is a wonderful tool in the right hands. The mark of a bad writer is when the reader has to reread sentences to decipher the meaning. Rebecca T. Dickson crafts sentences you'll reread simply for the pleasure of tasting them again on your tongue. SAY MY NAME is a first-person journey with a woman in her 40s coming to grips with what might have been. The story is powerful and real. No doubt those same scenes have been acted out in real life countless times. Beyond that, it's beautifully written. Masterful, like a fine painting. Yes, it's short, as long as the story requires, and not one word more.
