4.0 out of 5 stars Early Payne takes the biscuit 20 July 2008
Format:Audio CD
I wasn't too enamoured of Jack Payne's later work on "O-kay For Sound" (Vocalion vol. 3); the orchestral work was quite good although very old fashioned compared to the work of other famous contemporary bands, but the vocalists were a decided payne in the you-know-what. This collection (1928-1931) is much better in that Jack Payne is the featured vocalist (not a great singer, but effective and certainly palatable) and that the arrangements are in keeping with the times, are very well scored and very well played at that, with clean section and solo work. In my opinion this is the best set of titles available by Jack Payne and the BBC Dance Orchestra.

5.0 out of 5 stars HE SAID IT WITH MUSIC 8 Feb 2009
By Barry McCanna TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
Vocalion's first volume was set mainly in the mid-thirties, whereas this compilation concentrates on his BBC Dance Orchestra days. He commenced in mid-1928, and quit in early 1932, during the whole of which time he recorded for Columbia. His was a robust outfit, with a full sound which was well captured then and has been well remastered by Mike Dutton. Most of the tracks are vocal numbers, but for pianist Bob Busby's composition "Hot And Heavy", "Hot Bricks", Matt Malneck and Frankie Trumbauers' "Choo Choo", and Cole Porter's "Love For Sale", the lyrics of which were deemed too explicit for public dissemination. This was one of the top dance bands of the time, and listening to this selection it's easy to see why.
