3.0 out of 5 stars worth buying 21 Nov 2009
Perhaps because it is directed at the American market (Dover is after all an American publisher) the pronunciation of the Arabic appears to me(with a slight understanding of the language) to be overly complicated, but at the price still worth considering.

My holiday to Egypt was cancelled so cant comment on whether it's good or not - Maybe AMAZON could add a section to click for cases like this - so I have had to rate it as a 3 star and it could be a 5 ?

I think this book is very helpful with a prounounciation guide, alphabet, over 1,400 entries for every imaginable situatian, and clear type . It is also pocket sized for handy out of country reference.I learned the whole alphabet in 6 days and each word is in the index. Very Helpful.

This was my first Arabic book. I learned every word and phrase, loved it and continued studying, speaking and writing over many years I highly recommend it for anyone wanting to get started in Egyptian Arabic.
3.0 out of 5 stars Good basic guide for Arabic 31 Oct 2012

This handy Dover book is a good guide to spoken Arabic--but remember! It's based on Egyptian Arabic, so the way you pronounce things elsewhere in the Arabic-speaking world will be quite different. They should really tell you more about that before you buy the book. I'd prefer the book more if it used Modern Standard Arabic. You could always include an appendix on regional variations. For instance, "jeyd" (excellent) is pronounced "geyd" in Egypt. But... with that caveat, I'd recommend this book for its vocabulary, useful traveling size, and just because it's a Dover book, most of which are excellent! Enjoy!

1.0 out of 5 stars Not worth it 4 Feb 2004

I would not recommend this book. I live in Kuwait now and all my friends told me to throw it a way (so I did)
It is a waste of money, I am glad it was unexpensive but still a dissappointment.
