About the Author

Jack Foreman originally wrote this poem, based on a real childhood experience, when he was ten years old. It wasn't until many years later that he showed it to his father, and it became the picture book, Say Hello. Jack is currently studying art history at Nottingham University. Michael Foreman is one of the world's leading illustrators. He has won several major awards, including the Kate Greenaway Medal for Long Neck and Thunderfoot, and again for War Boy. His titles for Walker Books include Beowulf (9781844287543), Sir Gawain and the Green Knight (9781844287307), Mia's Story (9781844282784) and the bestselling Michael Foreman's Nursery Rhymes (9780744598209) and Michael Foreman's Playtime Rhymes (9781844284955). He lives in London.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clear pictures, clear message about loneliness and being included., 4 Oct 2008

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
A dog, all alone, would like a friend and asks the throng of happy children if he can play too and so joins in. Then a boy watching, equally alone, is too shy to ask to play. He is then invited by the dog to come and join in. It's a sparse story with very few words and simple pictures which are mainly black and white with highlights of colour (a red ball and blue shadows and horizon). The simplicity however belies the depth of this book's message - that it is no fun to be left out, everyone needs a friend and why not just "Say hello". It's a great way to suggest to a shy child that they say hello, or to read to a class to encourage empathy and the inclusion of everybody in games and activities. Perfect for foundation stage and early KS1 (ages 2-5).
