Amazon.co.uk Review

Seven years after he earned his first screen credit as the writer of Fast Times at Ridgemont High, former Rolling Stone writer Cameron Crowe made his directorial debut with this acclaimed romantic comedy starring John Cusack and Ione Skye as unlikely lovers on the cusp of adulthood. The casting is perfect and Crowe's rookie direction is appropriately unobtrusive, no doubt influenced by his actor-loving, Oscar-winning mentor, James L. Brooks. But the real strength of Crowe's work is his exceptional writing, his timely grasp of contemporary rhythms and language (he's frequently called "the voice of a generation"), and the rich humour and depth of his fully developed characters. In Say Anything, Cusack and Skye play recent high-school graduates enjoying one final summer before leaping into a lifetime of adult responsibilities. Lloyd (Cusack) is an aspiring kickboxer with no definite plans; Diane (Skye) is a valedictorian with plans to further her education in Europe. Together they find unlikely bliss, but there's also turbulence when Diane's father (John Mahoney)--who only wants what's best for his daughter--is charged with fraud and tax evasion. Favouring strong performances over obtrusive visual style, Crowe focuses on his unique characters and the ambitions and fears that define them; the movie's a treasure trove of quiet, often humorous revelations of personality. Lili Taylor and Eric Stoltz score high marks for memorable supporting roles, and Cusack's own sister Joan is perfect in scenes with her on- and offscreen brother. A rare romantic comedy that's as funny as it is dramatically honest, Say Anything marked the arrival of a gifted writer-director who followed up with the underrated Singles before scoring his first box-office smash with Jerry Maguire. --Jeff Shannon

4.0 out of 5 stars John Cusack and Cameron Crowe, who could ask for more?, 7 Feb 2004
Being a huge fan of both cameron crowe, and the legend that is John Cusack, I quite simply had to watch this movie, and it exceeded all expectations. This films story isnt particuarly original, its kinda pretty similar to every other story of this kind, where the girl has to make a big decision in life, stay with the guy she's in love with, or move away and study. The difference is, the screenplay for this movie is so well written and so well executed, that its almost as if, the screenplay was made for John Cusack, he reads the script like poetry.

The on screen chemistry is certainly present throughout the whole movie, and the entire cast perform brilliantly, especially pleased with John Mahoney's performance as Diane's dad. Its never slow at any point in the movie, and made me laugh many times, with plenty of "feel good" moments. This isnt your run of the mill "chick flick" this a wonderfully written, intelligent feel good movie, and I have, and will continue to reccomend this film to everyone and anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love and Relationships According to Lloyde Dobler, 20 Sep 2003
By Michael Crane - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)
Why did it take me so long to see this movie, I have no idea. I didn't even know that this movie existed until about a year ago or so. I think John Cusack is an outstanding actor and I really enjoy all of his movies. After reading all the rave reviews and seeing bits and bits of it on HBO, I decided to buy "Say Anything" and give it a shot. I was really impressed with it, I have to admit. "Say Anything" is a charming drama/comedy about first love and tough choices. It also marks the debut of the very talented director, Cameron Crowe.

Cusack stars as Lloyd Dobler, an optimistic guy who doesn't know what to do in the future after graduating high school. However, there is one thing that he does know; he's got a thing for Diane Court. Diane is a beauty and a straight A student; definitely way out of Lloyd's league. But that doesn't stop her from giving him a chance to take her out. After that, they start to fall for each other, despite all of the obstacles that are thrown in their way. One of those obstacles being Diane's over protective father who is currently having legal troubles with the FBI. It is a touching film that consists of humor and drama. We laugh and then we feel sad. And we are not too certain of what's going to happen next until it's all said and done.

John Cusack is very powerful and outstanding in his role. Finally, there's a film about a guy I can relate to! I could relate to him so much that it was starting to scare me a little. (Well, except for the kick-boxing. Couldn't relate to that.) But if he's able to get a catch like Diane Court, well maybe there's hope for me yet. Speaking of Diane, Ione Skye does a great job in the film. You can see why Lloyd would fall for a girl like that. And John Mahoney needs to be mentioned for he does a terrific job portraying Diane's father. He can be funny, cold, and caring.

Like I said earlier, this film marks the debut of the very talented Cameron Crowe. Not only did he direct it, but he also wrote it as well. I really admire how it was written because it seemed realistic and believable. He took a different approach to a teen love story that is rarely seen in most films. He adds just the right amount of humor as well as the right amount of drama.

"Say Anything" is a triumph on every front. It's a film I know that I will watch over and over again. If you want a film with humor and heart, this is the one for you. I really enjoyed this film, and it surprised me so many times. I'm glad I finally got around to seeing it. Now I can finally knock that one off the list of millions and millions of movies I still have to see. WOO-HOO! But there's still so many on the list. DOH! Oh well, it's always good to have a goal, at least.

5.0 out of 5 stars To know Lloyd Dobler is to love him..., 20 Aug 2002
By L. Newman "l_m_n" (Bristol, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Finally, one of my all time favourite movies on DVD!

I've owned the VHS version of this fantastic film for some years now,and it's getting a little tired from the multiple viewings!

The perfect mix of comedy, drama, and romance. I love Cameron Crowe's film making style, couple that with John Cusack's unique acting makes a perfect combination. Also, the sharp dialogue, supporting cast and the awesome soundtrack all mesh together to make this a timeless film, all the issues then are still relevant today - some thirteen years later.

If you've seen Crowe's other movies, Almost Famous, Jerry Maguire or Fast Times, you'll love this too. Or even if your a Cusack fan, I think the character 'Rob' that he played in High Fidelity is pretty much a grown-up version of Lloyd.

I'd recommend this for anyone, young and old, there's something for all to enjoy.
