Product Description

Product Description

Saxophone Basics is a landmark method by Andy Hampton, one of the leading figures in saxophone education. It starts at absolute beginner level and progresses to about Grade 2. There are 22 stages, each section includes a wonderful variety of concert pieces from the great composers, traditional tunes and fun, original exercises, 'finger gyms' and 'warm ups' to help establish a sound technique, 'factfiles' and 'quizzes' to teach notation and general musicianship, helpful, clear 'fingering charts' and 'rhythm boxes' and great illustrations. This Book/CD edition for alto saxophone is the perfect resource as the CD contains all the accompaniments to all the pieces as well as providing additional parts for the duets and trios. It is most suitable for those wanting to teach themselves. There is a book only edition available and for those that have the book, but not the CD, a separate accompaniment CD is also available. There are separate Teacher's Books for Alto Saxophone and Tenor Saxophone, which offer tips on how to approach new techniques and motivate young players. These would be particularly helpful for teachers who are not clarinet specialists. Contents: Stage 1: Down To Earth; Up And Away; Life s Little Ups And Downs; Bitter Sweet; At The End Of The Night; Feel The Heat. Stage 2: Come Join The Band; And So It Goes; Cor Blimey; Stage 3: Merrily We Blow Along; Caribbean Calypso; Stop FEEF!; Brazilian Girl; Stage 4: Sorted! The F# Files;Set Em Up; This Land Is My Land; Cool Ghoul; Stage 5: As I Walked Out; Sad Jazz Waltz; When The Saints; Rock That Sax!; About Face; Song Of The Volga Boatman; Stage 6: Razor Sharp; That Sinking Feeling; Deep D Duet; Call Of The Wild; Carnival Of Venice; Swanee River; Stage 7: Woogie Boogie; A Whole Lot Of Soul; Dotty Mazurka; Nobody Knows The Trouble I ve Seen; Stage 8: Lazy Days; Knock, Knock; It s A Cinch; Prokofieff: Lieutenant Kije; No Better Blues; Hatikvah; Sweet Betsy From Pike; Stage 9: Be Happy, Be Natural, Be Flat; Cool 4 Cats; Cat s Tail Swing; Stage 10: Two Down, One On The Side; The Ashgrove; Frankie And Johnny; Stage 11: Dee For Two; La Follia; Green Onions; Just Left Of Right; Concert Pieces; Vivace; Walk The Cat; Lay Me Down; Blue Call; Warm-Up Bossa; Greensleeves; One Mint Julep; Stage 13: Wave Them Goodbye; Duetteud; Creepin Around; Stage 14: C U Down There; Go With The Flow; You And Me; Stage 15: Which Way Now?; That Swing Things; Stage 16: God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen; Tell Me About It; Here Comes The Blues; Stage 17: I m Late For School!; Wintertime Blues; Stage 18: Take Your Partners Please; Scarborough Fair; Stage 19: Goodall: Theme From Red Dwarf; Harris: Miami Beach; Franck: Allegretto; Another Wet Wednesday; Stage 20: Lisk: Theme From Men Behaving Badly; Beethoven: 7th Symphony 2nd Movt; Alone Again.

I'd been thinking of taking up the saxophone for a number of years, but every time I went and looked for a tutorial book, I was put off by pages and pages of music scores and repetitive exercises.
When I found this, it was a real breath of fresh air. The book strikes a tone which acknowledges you are a relative beginner, but without resorting to a condescending tone.

The material is great, with a mixture of famous tunes and some original songs to learn to play.

The other really good thing about this particular book is that it tallies well with the pieces you need to play to take a grade (exam) in the sax. It meant that when I was taking my grade 3, I didn't have to go out and buy additional material to prepare.

I've now completed the book, and have fulfilled my goal of beginning to play the saxophone. I'm now planning to get another book by Hampton, with more advanced repertoire.

this book is excellent for beginners. I am 55 and on a whim bought a sax because I have always liked the sound - I bought this book and have managed to play 'the hovis tune' in three weeks. I am amazed. It tells you all you need to know in clear fun ways so that it is not a drudge to learn - you do one page and want to continue to the next. I would recommend for anyone. There is a cd so if you are really clever you can play the sax bits to the background music - sounds really good and inspires you to learn the next bit. Also you can go back and revise and it is still fun.

If you know nothing about music, it's is for you. If you are considering self study, this book is definitely not the best; its geared toward group play, not solo. Read more
