CD Description

Promising new Welsh singer songwriter delivers his debut welsh language album. Al Lewis…oozing with dreamy tones Influenced by artists such as Ryan Adams and the successful group Fleet Foxes, Al is a talented modern day singer songwriter who sits in a dreamy place between the Gentle Good and Jack Johnson. The album, co-written with Arwel Lloyd, showcases 10 diverse tracks from a romantic ballad to melodic rock oozing with magical and memorable melodies. We also hear an echo of the blues on Gwenwyn which is performed by the legend that is Meic Stevens Al sings about everyday stuff and blends his themes of love, loss, grief and uncertainty. The album presents amazing understated tracks and maturity, development and consistency is apparent. Al Lewis’ voice is rich yet gentle and leaves us yearning for more. The album was recorded by Llion Robertson in the Music Box Studio, Cardiff excluding Tybed be Ddaw which was recorded by Tim Hamill in Sonic One Studio, Llangennech. Throughout the EP we can here the great partnership between the band members; these include the guitarist Arwel Lloyd who co-writes with Al, Ryan Aston on drums and Wal Coughlan on bass. Tracks; 1 Trywydd Iawn / 2 Doed a Ddel / 3 Dechrau Amau / 4 Fi Fawr / 6 Gwenwyn / 7 Tyrd yn ol / 8 Tybed Be Ddaw / 9 Hwyrach Heno / 10 Lle Hoffwn Fod

I heard Track 10 "Lle hoffwn bod" on the TV and just loved it instantly. Bought the CD and just have to listen to it all the time. It's in the car at the moment and I'm finding it addictive. It does veer on the easy listening side but the songs are all well crafted and Al Lewis has a good voice. They are a little like David Gray or Coldplay and i thoroughly recommend it. Welsh contemporary music has improved beyond recognition in recent years and I feel that people have to get over the "can't understand it" mind set and just enjoy it. Al Lewis is a talented musician.

Bought this album after listening to Al Lewis on myspace. It's a great debut album with a series of well crafted songs. The musicianship is excellent and Al Lewis's voice is relaxed, versatile and tuneful. Getting Meic Stevens to sing a song on the album is a real coup - you get a feeling that Al Lewis might just be the young performer to take on Meic's mantle in Welsh singing. They both craft songs well and perform them with passion. If you're not used to singing in Welsh and you like music that sounds as if it could be from the David Gray/Jack Johnson sort of stable, you could give Al Lewis a go.
