This was the first time I had read a novel by Stuart MacBride (coincidentally, I`d noticed it at the library having just seen in WH Smith`s that another of his books was no. 1 in the bestsellers` list) and I wasn`t disappointed!

The subject matter (a serial killer who chops off the arms and legs of his young female victims before killing them, and who is being pursued across America by not just law enforcement, but also by a gang of psychos who were recruited by a mobster since the killer`s latest capture is the mobster`s daughter - sic and sick! ) is truly horrendous and shocking, but what I really enjoyed about this book is how the author managed to write such a gruesome story in such an amusing, upbeat way! Despite the sickening killings, beatings and amputations littered throughout the story (which is only a 111-page novel, and can be read in under 2 hours), I found myself laughing aloud at his sarcastic "asides", eg, `the couple lived in a crappy hotel with hot and cold running cockroaches` and `it`s amazing what a witness who couldn`t remember anything and didn`t want to get involved, suddenly remembered and told us when held upside down off the top floor of a car park` etc. The characterisation is also very good.

Believe me, this is brutal, nasty stuff, so not for the squeamish, but it`s written in a truly enjoyable style and almost unbelievably had me in hoots of laughter some of the time!

Firstly, this must not be taken too seriously or you won't enjoy it. I enjoyed it.

It has all the hallmarks of classic MacBride with his dark humour complimenting the nice'n'shocking depravation, gore and mutilation all quite colourfully described.

There's nothing wrong from departing from a successful theme for as much as I enjoy them, I would not want him to resent having to churn out Logan books along the same formula for ever and ever... I'm sure I'm not alone here.

It did give me Tarantino flashbacks though and I am loath to give more than three stars for what was essentially a short story, also not reflected in the price.

Thus, I would recommend the next departure from Aberdeen to be a collection of short stories that would serve to get things off his chest while ensuring fans get value for money.

Excellent 2 Aug 2008
Format:Paperback
For his first foray out of Aberdeen, Stuart MacBride has chosen to take us on an American road trip with a team of gangsters tracking their boss's daughter, who has been kidnapped by a serial killer.

"Sawbones" shouldn't take long to read. It's a short novel, printed in accessible font, and it's a pacy chase for a serial killer that keeps you turning the pages as quickly as you can. It's deceptive though, as you will spend as long being consumed by great gales of laughter as you do actually reading what is printed on the page. A dark and gruesome novel, full of short (four-letter) words, that brings together the best of gangster tradition and Stuart MacBride's inimitable gift for creating great characters.

Very good, but smaller than expected
I thought that this was a very good book, and that the story was well written. IT is a shame that it was a novella, could of been a longer one of Stuart MacBride's books. Read more

Little book for a big price
Change in genre for McBride and not as gruesome as his usual stuff. I found the story interesting but a tad short for the price. Much prefer his Aberdeen books, though.
