Reviews

From Amazon.co.uk

The slightly disappointing commercial returns for Saw 6 may have been grabbing the headlines when the film made its cinematic bow in October 2009, yet this clouded another factor about the movie itself: that it was the best Saw feature for some time.

Granted, the film does have an overriding feel of business as usual, and Saw VI isn’t shy about tying itself close to the hallmarks of the series thus far. So we get no shortage of gore, a collection of new traps for the latest unsuspecting victims to do battle with, and the influence of Tobin Bell’s Jigsaw still firmly felt.

In Saw VI though, it holds together a little better than we’ve been used to seeing. This time, we get Special Agent Stahm going up against Detective Hoffman, the latter of whom is very much trying to build on the legacy of Jigsaw. It’s not the deepest of premises, but it works, and the film ties in just enough plot intrigue to get you to the end. Plus, the set piece sequences work well, and while the editing style is still a little too fractious, the end result is a real improvement, and an effective horror movie. Inevitably, though, episode seven of the series is on the way…! --Jon Foster

5.0 out of 5 stars The Game Spins You Right Round 10 April 2010
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is perhaps the best in the series since the original. The always-reliable Tobin Bell is back for another round of flashbacks as Jigsaw, and steals the show in the few scenes he has. Costas Mandylor is also excellent, but the true star of the film is Peter Outerbridge as slimy health insurance executive William Easton.

The basic plot of the film is as follows: after Agent Strahm meets his sticky end, Jigsaw's successor Detective Hoffman (Mandylor) carries out one final game for his deceased mentor in the shape of William. William is thrown into a series of traps and must decide which of his employees live and which of them die, symbolising the decisions he makes when reviewing his clients' insurance applications. Meanwhile, Hoffman works alongside Agent Erickson (Mark Rolston) to determine if the secretly-framed Agent Strahm is in fact behind the latest Jigsaw killings, while Jigsaw's ex-wife Jill (Betsy Russell) has an agenda of her own in carrying out the puppet-master's will...

The traps, though not an important part of the films for me, are extremely clever and ingeniously designed, with strong direction by Saw veteran Kevin Greutert, a world away from Darren Lynn Bousman's acid trips of filmmaking in Saw IV. In fact, there is one trap at the end which may well be my favourite scene of the series...

The film is all at once disgusting, shocking, emotional and genuinely surprising, with an astonishing pace and phenomenal editing and along with Charlie Clouser's score ensures that the viewer is left exhilarated, enthralled and maybe even a little moved long after the credits have rolled; and, of course, eagerly anticipating the next instalment, as this one ends on a cliffhanger the size of The Italian Job. There are many of Saw's trademark twists and turns throughout the film, keeping the viewer guessing while at the same time changing the whole perspective of the series up to this point.

Yes, it will be very confusing for those unfamiliar with the series, but in my opinion one who watches a film called "Saw VI" and expects to fully follow it without seeing the others is being a bit silly, especially with a multi-layered and interconnected series such as this.

It is very rare indeed for a fifth sequel in a horror franchise to be anything other than dire, but Saw VI stands out as an incredible achievement, a roller coaster ride more thrilling than all of the other Saw sequels combined, with more focused direction, great writing by Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan, some of the series' best traps and strong performances. If you're a horror/thriller fan then you're in for a real treat.

Most of the extras are the usual fluff, with some brief looks at the traps, the character of Jigsaw and the new Saw maze attraction. There are also a couple of pointless music videos and a pair of commentaries, one from the producers and the other with Greutert, Melton and Dunstan. The producers' track has its share of shaky moments, but the other commentary is certainly worth a listen.

I have loved all the saw films but i have to admit they have been slipping in recent years but this one puts it back at its best. Some great new traps and plenty of gore and a storyline that is the best since the original, although saw 2 was also a great story. If you liked the previous saw films you will love this one and if you have gone off the saw films recently then watch this one as you will be glad you did.Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good and gory addition to the series 22 Dec 2009
By Dr Evil TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:DVD
With Special Agent Stahm (Scott Patterson) dead, the sinister Detective Hoffman (Costas Mandylor) has emerged to carry on Jigsaw's murderous work. With the FBI drawing ever closer to maniacal Hoffman, the detective is cornered into setting yet another gruesome game in motion: a blood-drenched pursuit that will finally shed light on the really reasons behind Jigsaw's grand scheme.

This sixth instalment provides all of the graphic violence, imaginative and sick traps and some shocking twists, as you'd expect from the series and also gives a lot more background into Jigsaw's life and some of the reasons why he does what he does. Hoffman is more twisted and evil than ever, some characters return as well as new ones introduced. This is a good, entertaining horror that any fan of the series will love, however I did find that the new characters weren't all that great. For example, the unfortunates who are on the roundabout trap are in the film for, what - 30 seconds before meeting there possible demises, so I didn't really care one way or another who would live or die. Other than that, this is a great addition to the series, the gory special effects are excellent and truly stomach-turning, the story digs even deeper into the over plot of the six films (and leaves lots of loose ends for another sequel) and the action is as exciting as ever.

Overall, although this isn't the best in the series, if you've seen the other films then I definitely recommend watching this, if not though I imagine that this film won't make a lot of sense so you should go back to the brilliant start.
