Book Description

10 Nov 2011
Siobhan Doran has photographed the ambitious restoration of The Savoy, the world-renowned hotel on London s Embankment. Built by impresario Richard D'Oyly Carte with profits from his Gilbert and Sullivan operas, the hotel opened on 6 August 1889. It enjoyed a resurgence of fame during the 1920s with both major art deco redecoration, and guests as varied as Noel Coward, Igor Stravinsky, Josephine Baker and George Gershwin. The book traces the work through four periods of the restoration project. It opens with the process of stripping out, which in many instances exposed original detail. The two following sections follow the painstaking structural restoration and its progression into the new designs. The final section covers the finishing touches of decoration and furnishing. As the project developed Siobhan Doran became captivated by the hotel s fifth-floor River Suites with their varied views across the Thames. Revisiting these rooms many times in the course of more than 100 visits to the hotel, she developed the concept of returning and remaking images, which she then expanded to embrace to other areas in the building. This approach also unconsciously reflects the many views and insights that the now-reopened hotel's customers observe daily depending on the season in which they visit, the length of their stay, the areas that they frequent and whether it is their first visit or one of many.

A unique unassuming look at one of London's iconic establishments. Depicting a rarely before seen account behind the surface of one of the worlds most exclusive hotels, the book has captured a unrepeatable moment in its history.

5.0 out of 5 stars beautfully photographed book 22 Nov 2012
By vjones
There is glamour and opulence speckled throughout the whole book even in the photographs taken mid-flow of the restoration process. Rich in architectural and period detail throughout; the glimpses of lavish rooms and the various nooks and crannies of this iconic London landmark are all beautifully captured and documented by the photographer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Elegant and beautiful images 22 Nov 2012
I really enjoyed this book. It's not just a photo record of the end result of the renovation, it's about going back to the Savoy building core structure, and the surprising beauty of what is revealed. This book is very artfully photographed and it reveals surprising beauty in the process of restoring the Savoy to it's current opulence. I'd really recommend it!

5.0 out of 5 stars amazing behind the scenes insights 21 Nov 2012
I loved this book. The images are beautiful and show what lies beneath the polish and decadence of the Savoy. A wonderful pictoral record of an extensive project to restore a London icon.

4.0 out of 5 stars On My Coffee Table 21 Nov 2012
By G.Lover
This pictorial documentation of the restoration of the Savoy Hotel is imaginatively presented with the before River Room Suites, during and finished examples, showing how total the refurbishment was.
All the images are of the quality that a book of this sort should be and do justice to the whole venture. Some make me smile.
A great gift for those interested in the Hotel, building refurbishment in general and photography.

3.0 out of 5 stars Could have been better 17 April 2012

Not a bad book at the discounted price, but it could have been so much better with a more imaginative photographer. When that amount of money is spent on a complete renovation, it deserves a better record than this. I think you will be disappointed if you buy at the published price.
