A true inspiration!,
By
This review is from: Saving Samantha: A Young Woman's Escape From Childhood Hell (Paperback)
Here is Samantha's personal journey put into words. To help others who have had similar experiences break out of the cycle.
We are taken back to Samantha's most painful memories when as a child, she and her siblings suffered both physical and psychological abuse at the hands of their own parents. She wasn't allowed to have opinions or even feelings and the severe lack of love from her family destroyed her self-esteem and confidence. Samantha was brutally beaten by her dad and received no help or support from her mum. She grew up on a rough council estate with no heating and was locked in her bedroom from 7pm, with only a bucket for a toilet. Living in constant fear, her childhood was nothing short of horrific. Samantha considered running away several times but was told she "couldn't survive on her own". This sadism that she was subjected to every day made her attempt to end her life on many occasions, the first time at the age of just fourteen. Samantha was diagnosed with clinical depression and given medication. At eighteen she decided the only way to get better was to cut herself off from her background and family completely. After long cycles of depression, anxiety and counselling Samantha voluntarily checked herself into a psychiatric hospital for a while. It was here, that she began to search for answers to explain her family's behaviour and her own feelings, questioning her parents' childhoods. Samantha's explanation of depression, from the survivor's viewpoint and what triggers it is incredibly touching. This self-healing should be an inspiration to sufferers and in fact everyone who reads this extremely well written book. I was impressed with the total openness and honesty with which she writes. Although the events she went through were heartbreaking, the way in which she completely turns her life around is beautiful. The book is both moving and gripping as Samantha, equipped with buckets of determination, courage and personal strength comes to terms with her past and who she really is.

A no frills tale of survival,
By Louise (Berkshire) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Saving Samantha: A Young Woman's Escape From Childhood Hell (Paperback)
I have to strongly disagree with the previous review. The book is a very personal and frank account of a young girl's terrible up-bringing and struggle to deal with life. What sets this book apart from others is the very 'down to earth' way it has been written. Yes, there may be sections where you think, did I really need to know that? But it just highlights the fact that this is not fiction, the character is real with real experiences! The book is clearly written in the hope that it will help others overcome their depression and open others' eyes to what is still I believe a taboo subject with many people.
A good read and an inspiration to all!

A BRILLIANT BOOK,

I herd about this book from a friend who thought I would find it useful. I am glad that it was recomended to me as I certainly found Samantha's story helpful. It was nice for me to be able to feel less isolated and alone. Samantha's thoughts were very similar to mine and I was so relieved to have read this book and found that my thoughts of self-worth and depression are not 'abnormal'. By putting her story out there for others, Samantha has given readers like me, depression sufferers, something to help encourage and inspire us. And for that I am thankful. I would recomend this book to anyone in an instant. What an inspitation this woman is. Samantha has given me hope that I too can get well myself one day and there has not been anyone else who has managed that with me.
