Product Description

When Detective Chief Inspector Bernie Bisto discovers a 'stiff' going solo down the River Thames in London's East End, he is drawn into the murky depths of espionage and murder. Hermione Hush, paramour and secret agent, is kidnapped and having been deviously poached by M16, Bisto becomes obsessed with rescuing her from the clutches of the Mafia. His efforts are questionably enhanced by the appearance of an unlikely hero in the form of Digo the guard dog and this leads the reader into an adventure full of of canine comedy and unexpected twists and turns. Joined by his accidental cycling companion Pierre Velo and junior detective Jack Somers, on a riotous and rib-tickling journey down to the South of France, Bisto finds himself risking his life in a world of double dealing, mystery and intrigue. The elegance of the Cote d'Azur in the roaring twenties provides a backdrop of glamour, greed and excitement to the second in the series of Bernie Bisto Murder Mystery novels.

More About the Author

Ursula Rubery has been excited by the written word from an early age. She is drawn to literary farce and loves to introduce larger than life characters into her stories. Her first two novels, 'The Garlic Murders' and 'Saving Hermione' are part of a trilogy which track the international crime fighting duo, Detective Chief inspector Bernie Bisto and Hermione Hush, alias Agent Doubleaitch. Double dealing, mystery and intrigue are always central to her plots.

She has written feature articles for French property magazines detailing her adventures whilst living in France and has contributed to both online and print editions of the national press. Her blog blueskyfrance.blogspot.com is placed where the sea meets the sky on the Cote d'Azur. Bernie Bisto comes to life in her blog berniebistomysteries.blogspot.com

Ursula has now made her debut as a children's author. 'Zachary's Christmas' is the tale of a very troubled little boy whose dog has mysteriously disappeared and as a result, he has become a terror at school. With Christmas fast approaching his emotions and feelings reach a climax. Will the season of good will prevail? zacharyjamesbrown.blogspot.com

Ursula lives both in London and Nice. She loves swimming and sailing and writing novels which, she hopes, surprise and make the reader smile, a lot! The River Thames, with its majesty and history, together with the warmth of the Mediterranean light, nourish the imagination which she pours into her writing.

She has also been greatly influenced by Hardy, Trollope and Gaskell and more recently, Tom Sharpe, who was one of her heroes of literary farce.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unable to put down! 28 Sep 2013
By SYBx
Format:Paperback
A brilliant caper - love, intrigue, cycling, sailing, mafia,South of France and 'man's best friend' to boot. What can I say Hermione is a formidable woman of her time and the loyalty of her man DCI Bisto keeps us enthralled with their tumuluous love affair whilst they both fervently attempt to bring 'the bad guys'in.If you love a good mystery but also enjoy a beautifully descriptive tale then like me you will not be able to put this one down and will be eagerly awaiting the next installment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bisto in hot pursuit 5 Sep 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I enjoyed this second book in the series even more than the first. I found the writing slightly less 'buoyant' which I liked better. The sense of farce was still very much to the fore, but it was mellowed by the thrilling adventures that challenged Bisto more than in the previous book.

I also loved the setting - on the Train Bleu of the roaring twenties. How I wish I could have travelled on it, with its dashing livery and stylish service. So romantic! SNCF is a poor replacement! From the train, the action moved to the French Riviera, involving smart hotels, lighthouses, boats and the sea. Bisto is sent to France with a Monsieur Pierre Velo, a cyclist with the Tour de France who he meets in London, in pursuit of Doubleaitch and DI Somers to give them a hand.

No one seems to be what they are, so you never know who is on whose side. Bisto picks up a dog along the way though who helps save the day in a dramatic scene set on a stormy sea. It's all most thrilling!

Bisto's main aim in this book is to prove to HH that he is worthy of her love. He is sorely tested!

Altogether a merry caper across the continent from London to Nice, with baddies, goodies and the rotten. Terrific writing and plot, this book is a delight to read.
