Review

Saunders demonstrates well his breadth of knowledge of ecclesiastical architecture and history. Further than that, he shows a depth of understanding and feeling for these buildings and their place in society and history that can be lacking from drier, more academic authors. --Victorian

Product Description

The Friends of Friendless Churches exist to save beautiful and historic places of worship from demolition or degradation. Founded in 1957 by the devout journalist and author Ivor Bulmer-Thomas, the Friends now own thirty-eight former places of worship, half in England, half in Wales, which they preserve, undertake repair on where necessary and make accessible as peaceful spaces to visitors and the local community. This book, with a Preface by Sir Simon Jenkins and a Foreword by HRH The Prince of Wales, details all thirty eight buildings, with photographs that touchingly record these former churches and celebrate the work of the Friends.

Included are a short history of the Friends of Friendless Churches, a glossary of terms, and information on visiting the churches.

beautiful 9 Jun 2010
A beautiful record of the churches owned by the Friends of the Friendless Churches. This splendid but little known organisation has saved nearly 40 churches from dereliction or demolition. The bigger and more widely known Church Conservation Trust has more churches in its care, but this book makes you realise what gems the Friends look after. The book gives a brief history of the organisation and then describes and illustrates all of the churches in its care. Many are in Wales and most are off the tourist track, but, as the superb photograhs show, all have real charm and interest. The overall presentation and layout of the book is very attactive and deserves a place on the bookshelf of anyone interested in the rich ecclesiastical architectural heritage of the UK. If you already have Jenkins's "1000 Best Churches" and have enjoyed it, add this to your wish list straight away!

A good buy 25 Jun 2010
This is a fascinating book. It is handsomely produced, with good quality photos and lots of detail. If you are in to old churches, this is a must.
