5.0 out of 5 stars Deep and meaningful fun 30 Mar 2005
I watched this four times in a week! My favourite line is when Mary holds a Bible in front of her attackers and says 'This is not a weapon!'
It exposes the truth behind the stereotypes in a fun and non-offensive way. I recommend you watch it - it'll certainly make you laugh and may even give you cause to think.

5.0 out of 5 stars well done skewering of the Christian subculture 15 Oct 2004
A film by Brian Dannelly
The movie "Saved!" is a potentially controversial movie that just sort of slipped under the radar when it was released in theatres. At first glance, and without putting any thought into what the movie is actually saying, it would seem that "Saved!" is absolutely savaging the Christian community. The Christians in the film come off as hypocritical fools (at best) and the sympathetic characters are those with anti-Christian behaviors. But that is only the candy coating on "Saved!" The heart of the picture has to do with a portion of the Christian sub-culture which shows a public veneer of popular Christianity but has none of the heart or the message of what Christ taught. That is what "Saved!" is truly lampooning.
Mary (Jena Malone) is a senior at a very Christian high school in a very Christian town. Everything in her world is protected by the "Christian" label, from the music she listens to the Christian home decorators, and so on. The only thing that does not fit into her Christian world is her boyfriend Dean (Chad Faust), who has recently come out to her that he is gay. Since this is an affront to everything she knows and believes in, and she knows that God does not want him to be gay, Mary believes that Jesus wants her to sleep with him to de-gayify Chad. She does, and it doesn't. He is sent away to Mercy House, which is intended to get him the "help he needs". What comes out of this first encounter is that Mary becomes pregnant.
She does not know this at first, of course, so Mary slides into her life in high school where she is friends with the uber-Christian Hillary Faye (Mandy Moore). Hillary Faye is over the top Christian, but filled with bitterness which she takes out on her brother, Roland (Macaulay Culkin).

4.0 out of 5 stars A Really Good Teen Comedy! 14 Oct 2008
Mary is a typical christian teenager, that is until she falls pregnant & the father of the baby is sent off to a camp.
Mary is left on her own, decieding that she doesn't believe in God anymore. Her friends abandon her but she befriends wild child Cassandra & wheel chair-bound Rowland.
The comedy in this film is predominantly black comedy, at times the movie is really funny. It puts across an interesting portrayal of the life of a teenage Christian & the dilemas faced by adolescents in general (wanting to fit in, having the right hairstyle).
Saved is a great teen comedy, its not about sex or drugs or hot jocks its about the struggles of adolescents (& of course that includes teen pregnancy.)
Although with all teen comedies there are the inevitable stereotypes; the popular mean girl, the hot guy that likees her back & the dumb one of the group. The movie also highlights the narrow-mindedness of Christian society in the dealings with homosexuals & teen pregnancy, as a non-christian I was more than happy to see this portrayed on screen!
Anyways, agood film, not groundbreaking but if your looking for a slightly different teen comedy this is one of the best one on offer.

I thought this film was meaningful and had great truths in it, with being very funny at the same time. I am a Christian, and found this film to also be very Christian, and can teach Christians a lot. It really tackles some of the questions in the modern church - including some of the hypocrisy we see. I give it full marks for being a touching and deep film which I could watch again and again.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE BEST FILM EVER 4 Dec 2004
This has to be the best film i have ever seen in my life. It is so funny and so moving at the same time. Macaulay Culkin, Jena Malone and Mandy Moore as well as all the other characters are fantastic in it, especially Macaulay Culkin, who plays Roland.
Scenes such as Hilary Faye trying to exorcise Mary and Cassandra going crazy in assembly will have you in fits of laughter! i havent been able to stop watching this film ever since i got it, its that good. If you havent yet seen this film, GO SEE IT NOW because you dont know what you're missing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant! 15 Jan 2006
Saved! is oe of the best movies I've seen of late, it is brilliantly funny but also has underlying moral issues about christianity and acceptance and deals with many different types of problems facing adolescents, from disability to underage pregnancy

5.0 out of 5 stars Really good 9 Oct 2008
I thought that this was one of the best films I ve seen in the High school movie genre in ages - the bit were the jewish girl has everyone thinking she is speaking in tounges at the school assembly when she is actually being really crude is hilarous and the bit were Hilary throws a Bible at Mary is laugh out loud.

4.0 out of 5 stars More than just your average comedy! 29 May 2005
This film dares touch upon what is a very touchy subject in America these days. Christianity. The film feels light, and is definately funny, but does make an underlying serious point. I won't ruin it for you, but if you're extreme in your religious beliefs, you may be offended. Welcome returns for Almost Famous star Patrick Fugit, and Donnie Darko's Jena Malone, and Macaulay Culkin is fantastic.
A great comedy with surprising depth.

A little close to the bone, maybe, but this movie exaggerates everything which is refreshing. An enjoyable watch, I don't often laugh out loud that much!
