I nearly didn't read this little gem because of the silly blurb on the back of the book. Such a shame that would have been!
Firstly, a main feature of this plot is Maggie. Maggie is a delightful 85 year old grandmother who is full of life and several opinions. Maggie is currently babysitting her great grandson Harry, who is also vital to the plot, while Harry's mother goes to Germany to reconcile with her husband. This may sound like back story, but this all unfolds slowly through the story.
Our hero, Yiannis Savas, is a suave, rich, jet-setting playboy who is thrilled to bits to have Maggie live in the flat on his property (she keeps his brothers away). He has the ideal life. This all changes the morning after he returns from Malaysia and Maggie calls him to tell him she's fallen. Yiannis loves this grandmother and rushes to her aid only find out she's broken her hip and must stay in hospital. Harry now has a new, somewhat experienced, babysitter. Maggie tries to calm Yiannis's fears by telling him her other granddaughter Cat will soon be here.
Cat MacLean is Yiannis's former lover. When she arrives, Cat is mortified to find out that Maggie is in hospital and will be for a while, Maggie has been babysitting Harry, Harry's mother is in Germany, and that Yiannis now has charge of her teething nephew. She has no real child experience, but she learns real fast.
Cat and Yiannis's relationship is fraught with difficulties. There are serious trust issues that still plague them, Yiannis hates Cat's new fiancé and is determined to break them up, Yiannis's mother arrives with the declaration that she has left his father, and then the joys of the teething child. Watching Yiannis's world fall apart is bittersweet. The sparkling, occasionally funny, dialogue keeps the story from becoming moribund. As they work through each of the problems, slowly they realise that it is time they both grow up and face reality. It helps when they fall back in love, too.
This story is better than the salacious blurb on the back that lead me to think it was going to be sex-a-thon when I picked it up. It is a great story.
