5.0 out of 5 stars Indispensable source on a neglected sculptor, 20 Nov 2001
By A Customer
Savage Messiah has shortcomings as biography, really being a collection of letters strung together with short biographical passages, and one senses that it leaves a lot of gaps. Nevertheless, it is an indispensable document, with a key role in establishing Gaudier-Brzeska's posthumous reputation, and succeeds brilliantly in conveying the incandescence of his personality and talent. His platonic but passionate relationship with his beloved Sophie also emerges vividly (even if in the end it remains inexplicable), as does her tormented personality, together with the destructive effects of the poverty they endured. By the end the reader cannot fail to be moved by the tragedy of his death on the battlefield at twenty-five, the loss of such a talent to modern sculpture and the despair which Sophie faced in being left utterly alone. The book is well illustrated with vivid and often amusing line drawings and black-and-white photographs of several important sculptures and drawings in the author's collection, now on public display at Kettle's Yard in Cambridge. Gaudier-Brzeska died too young to establish a wide reputation, and public recognition of his work has never matched its importance. Savage Messiah provides a remedy for this neglect and should have a place in everyone's collection of art books.
