I believe this book to be one of the best on the market and believe that it offers readers not only practical guidance but an insight into the psyche of the people of Saudi Arabia.

I found in this book a wealth of information on how to survive daily life in Saudi Arabia and the pitfalls to avoid in the country. You cannot take a posting to Arabia lightly. It is essential to take a guide like this to the kingdom to know what you are letting yourself into and not leave it to pot luck. The author combines historical, social and religious contexts with snippets of interesting anecdotes, providing guidance regarding everyday living, motoring, banking, security, health, etc. This is an up-to-date companion for the expat, well worth reading for its serious and also its frivolous content. If, like Effortless Warrior, you are seeking something more light-hearted to lap up the culture through the eyes of one traveller's experiences in Arabia and neighbouring Yemen, then try Fun Runs and GunsFun Runs and Guns - Trips and Trails Through Yemen and Saudi Arabia.

Read with caution 1 July 2011
I bought this about a month for heading to Saudi to work/live as a western ex-pat kinda person. Half way through I ended up deciding not to read it - it was painting a negative picture in my mind before even getting there. Better off reading something lighthearted !

Dont get me wrong - it's not a bad book per se - but it might send you out on the airplane with a lot of fears about things that might or might not happen. I think its better just to go to Saudi and form your own opinions.

An interesting read but if you are basing your opinion to take a job in Saudi or not be careful. This might be enough to sway you against.

I'll likely finish it after I have been here a few months and firmly have my own opinions made.

Its a bit like listening to peoples holiday stories - some loved a place and some would never go back. Who do you listen to ?
