Absolutely Amazing 28 Jan 2006
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
I have no idea where I discovered Breaking Benjamin; all I know is that I'm certainly glad I did. This is a powerful, consistent album which, when I listen to it, makes me think: "I must've done something good to deserve this brilliance penetrating my ears." (Surprisingly, in some parts this album reminds me of a softer version of Korn [specifically their eponymous CD].)

The band have a very 'raw' sound, emphasised by the lead singer's rough yet emotional vocals. One of the most remarkable aspects of this CD is the fact that it combines heavy rock guitars with cohesive vocals rather than incomprehensible screaming - you can actually hear the lyrics! (Which is obviously a great thing.)

Opener 'I Wish I May' is one of my favourites, along with 'Skin', 'No Games', 'Shallow Bay' and the beautiful 'Next To Nothing'; although these are simply the icing on a delicious cake. ('Sugarcoat' does not appeal to me as much as the rest of the album, though it is still of a good standard.)

Overall, I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys powerful rock music which actually has a tune and understandable vocals.

Breaking Benjamin's debut is a solid performance that showcases the band's melodic, riff-driven rock. Their sound is more than a touch reminiscent of Creed, who in turn could easily be mistaken for a certain Seattle area band. However, Breaking Benjamin absorb, rather than rehash, their influences and deliver some fantastically polished tunes on this record. Few recent new arrivals have so effortlessly merged riffs and driving rhythms with such catchy, rousing choruses. Not worthy of five stars as there is nothing truly innovative on this album, but sure to be a big hit with anyone who likes to be able to sing to their favourite bands, and rock at the same time.

I heard and keep hearing breaking benjamin at the end of credits on films, they're music is completly geared up for that or so it seems, yes it works well when your trying to remember what lynsey lohan's character is actaully called but it works a world better when you want to express your emotion without sliting your writsts, this is great american rock. But typical. I don't know much about them but they mix power chord riffs the way nickleback do to make an incredibly heavy sound whilst not going as far as slipknot btw. and then slipping awesome riffs over the top often a la funeral. However, they do not sound in any way at all like either of them. Songs such as sugarcoat, water, polyamorus and natural life are simply masterpieces. They don't focus too much on complicated picture painting lyrics but have a more down to earth approach and for me its a great break from all the crud that's out there at the moment. This is surly the best four piece band around at the moment challenged only by brand new.
It's great American rock metal and i can garentee you'll love it. Everyone i know does. N.B. if you go to their site you can listen to all of their songs and watch a few videos ;)
Enjoy! Highly recommended. it's even better when your dumped aswell
cheers all

This is a great album. More raw power than the two following records. I think this is the best album the band have made to date. Great lyrics and vocals. Read more

promising, heavy, etc
as the rating suggests this is a good album a bit short of greatness. In its favour are the heavy guitars, good solos, solid if not suprising drumming + catchy choruses. Read more
