Satie first came to my attention when listening to the radio. After a little pondering, I plumped for this particular CD as it included the gymnopedies which had first delighted my ears. It is a wonderfully relaxing concoction of piano music, and very different to other classical music that I have come across. It has a quaint irregularity that I love, and the gentle succession of tracks will take you away to a beautifully serene mental state, it has never failed to make me smile yet. It would definitely rank as one of my favourite CDs, which is how it came to be lost to me!! It was in the car that I blew up a couple of months ago, and so I am very definitely going to replace it at some point. I did think about trying to find a cheaper Satie compilation, but as it is this one that has always captured my imagination, and warmed my soul, it is this one that I shall buy again!!

Most reviews here consider the CD either really good or really bad. I'm going to stay somewhere in between.
I think that Mr. Simmonds is correct when he says that the music is played really slowly. The Gnossiennes No. 1, for example, is so slow that it makes you bored. But overall, the CD sounds nice and peaceful. I just think that some the music here could have been played with a bit more of tempo. Instead of making Satie's music romantic, they sound kind of dreamy in the CD.

I do not agree with A.J. Simmonds' recommendation. This is how Satie should be played: slowly, to convey the full force of Satie's inventions. Satie's music is very powerful and Reinbert de Leeuw (the performer) will allow you to discover it on your own. He goes out from the usual mould, others have given pretty, romantic interpretations and in this way they have completely destroyed Satie's artistic achievement. But this is a minimalistic playing that is perfect for the material, de Leeuw only understood what others couldn't.

It's very difficult to appreciate Satie due to massive over exposure to his oeuvre. Ignore the other reviews here that say this album is played too slowly. To me it's a well focussed attempt to allow the wonderful chords and space in this music to shine through. The result is an album that doesn't sound so much like the adverts you may have heard this music on before and is therefore all the better for it - these interpretations lend some much needed freshness to these over-played classics. I was very happy to add this to my collection.

This is the ideal Satie recital: slow and spacious, played with incredible depth and yearning... Forget all the other (mis)interpretations, with this music Satie was not intending to be playful or baroque, but deep and soulful. De Leeuw, the pianist, offers an insightful rendition that captures Satie's intentions perfectly. Ignore A J Simmond's ignorant one-star review!

This recording clearly divides listeners. I wouldn't normally bother posting a negative review but I do think that prospective buyers should be aware that it is an exceptionally slow and very self - conscious performance. Clearly, Satie anticipates much of contemporary minimalism and that is part of his attraction for the modern listener. Reinbert de Leeuw tries to underline this link in such a heavy handed way that he completely misses Satie's wit, playfulness and sense of humour. He also misses Satie's fragile beauty. It seems a very affected and totally humourless performance that will be irritating to many people. I played this disc once and then got rid of it immediately. I don't normally react this way to music and will try again even with performances that I don't like first time around. Not with this disc. There are much better -and cheaper- performances by Ciccolini, John McCabe, Pascal Roge, Peter Lawson and Angela Brownridge that give a more fully rounded picture of Satie's musical personality.
