5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent apart from the manual, 21 Jul 2008
By Peter Scott "peter46077" (Norfolk) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is a compact receiver, about the same size as a freeview box. It works well, though the free scart cable is of poor quality. You can use it at home, and for camping as it has a 12 volt socket. It doesn't seem to need a particularly good signal.

However the manual is awful. I know a bit about satellite and I found it hard going. Technical terms are used without explanation and sections are included without telling you whether you are likely to need them for a normal set-up. To a non-technical person it could be daunting or baffling.

What is needed is a cut-down explanation, in simple steps, about how to set it up for normal use. Then the more knowledgeable user can be given the rest of the stuff. For normal use it is actually very easy to set up, though for someone wanting just freesat it is as well to learn which transponders are required, rather than have to plough through a huge list of possible stations.

Overall a very nice piece of kit, hence the 5 stars. Minus 10 for the manual.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great value, great range of features, however fundamentally flawed., 14 April 2009
By S. Davis "samdavis" (Kent) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I bought this receiver and have been using it for the last six months to receive Freesat standard definition channels. Price wise I was quite happy, although Bush and Grundig freesat boxes from Comet were only a few pounds more expensive. At the time I bought this box most places had sold out of Freesat SD boxes.

For the record: the free scart cable that NetGadgets keep advertising was useless, the cable did not work.

The receiver packs some useful features that others on the market don't. I chose to buy this one for the RF modulator; I installed this box with my main TV in the lounge used the built in RF modulator to transmit the picture and sound into a bedroom using co-axial cable, rather like in a Sky installation. I didn't want to spend any more money on wireless transmitters so this came in very useful. Other Freesat SD boxes from the likes of Bush and Grundig did not come with this feature.

Connectivity wise the box is great, You can hook up RF antenna leads, scarts to TV and VCR and AV connections which I used to hook the box up to a Hifi amp. All this connectivity was all very good but all the connections on the back were way too close together for my liking and it proved difficult to keep the scart leads in place.

Setting up the box is easy enough once you know what you're doing. The important thing to note is that the box is desinged to receive ALL types of sattelite TV and radio services, not just Freesat. You have to tell the receiver what sattellite you want to scan to pick up channels: the Freesat satellite is Astra, 28 degrees (check on avfourms.com for more info on this...).

Don't expect channel scanning to be as simple as freeview either. When I scanned for channels I got a whole load of encrypted channels and regional variations that needed deleting. Channels are pulled into a strange order that most people would want to adjust. The box will not scan for new channels and add them automatically in the same way as a freeview box: you have rescan the whole satellite list.

Also note: at present you can not receive the channel 'Dave' on freesat. I was also unable to receive BBCi or telextext on the receiver, there was no functionality for digital teletext services.

The picture produced by the box was fine and no more pixelated than freeview. The EPG (program guide) was a disaster, it was impossible to receive up to date now and next information. The clock (shown on the front display) never kept accurate time. The clock would stop when the box went onto standby and couldn't update itself untill it went on certain channels.

The receiver did include a game of Tetris; nothing special but it was fun for five minutes or so!

All in all the box was cheap and it just about did the job. However the software on the device is flawed and I think a lot of people would find it diffuclt to use. I found it ok but my girlfriend found it more diffcult to work with than a freeview box.

I'm unlikely to buy another Freesat receiver as I have moved to an area with freeview coverage. I don't think I would by this box again if I did need freesat. I would imagine that a dedicated Freesat receiver such as the Bush or Grundig model would be a lot more user friendly and reliable. Another option for receiving standard definition freesat would be to find an old Sky receiver (come up on eBay all the time) and purchase a viewing card for the free channels.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but not what i wanted, 28 Feb 2009
By Mr. D. A. Wherrell (Cambridge, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is a good receiver, capable of receiving a vast number of channels, but only if they are not scrambled, of course. Unfortunately, a previous review alleged that it is capable of being run fromn a 12V DC supply. It isn't. The 12v reference is to a socket which provides 12v OUTPUT for a dish rotator, though this takes some finding out because the instruction manual is hopeless. Unless you have some technical knowledge, you may have difficulty setting it up and operating it. I wanted this receiver to use when camping and 12V operation is required when mains hook-up is not available on site. However, a lowish power 12V-230V inverter will solve the problem. The receiver worked well in testing with a Maxview portable satellite-dish-in-a-suitcase kit.
