Book Description

1303 and the Old Man of the Mountain remembers back to when he nearly killed Edward I thirty years before. He now decides to release an imprisoned leper knight to avenge old grievances and take the King's life. A few months later two nuns are returning to their monastery in York, where they are confronted by the horrific sight of a man hungrily being consumed by fire, the sickly smell of burning flesh lingering in the air. News of the grisly death greets Edward as he arrives in York for secret negotiations with the leaders of the military Templar Order. His unease deepens when an attempt is made on his life. When the assassin, wearing Templar livery, is found dead - having been engulfed by a mysterious fire - Edward immediately turns to his Keeper of the Secret Seal, Hugh Corbett, to investigate. The ninth brilliant novel in the Hugh Corbett series.

As usual Paul Doherty is historically correct in this mediavel thriller involving the Knight's Templars. Once again we meet the keeper of the King's Seal, Sir Hugh Corbett, and once again he is faced with solving murders for his master, King Edward I . Murders abound in the region of York where Edward is visiting. Also visiting and residing in a nearby lodge are the Grand Master and four senior commanders of the Order of the Knight's Templars. The deaths occur in the vicinity of the Templar's estate and each body is destroyed by a fire so unusual and ferocious it becomes named Satan's Fire. Corbett is convinced that one of the five senior Templars is responsible for these murders and the attempts on his own and his king's lives. But who, why and how evade him, and I'm sure most of his readers, until the final chapter.

Devilishly hot reading from PC Doherty
Sheikh Al-Jebal, 'the old man of the mountain' vowed the assassin's vengeance on Edward I of England and Philip IV of France both infidel kings of the west. Deep in the underground dungeons of Am Massafia an unknown knight also vows retribution for the atrocities that occurred when the great and holy city of Acre fell to the Turks.
In the year 1303, Edward King of England visits the City of York; an attempt is made on his life. Royal Clerk Sir Hugh Corbett, Keeper of the Kings Secret Seal investigates the treasonous plot. Assisted by his faithful henchman Ranulf atte Newgate the Royal Clerk's investigations lead to nearby Framlingham Manor which houses the Grand Master of the Order of Knights Templar and his English commanders, who have recently returned from France.
Locals and servants at the manor report strange behaviour by the warrior monks, which strengthen the rumours that their order is involved in sinister and satanic deeds. Sir Hugh and Ranulf are soon embroiled in mysterious and macabre deaths, caused by strange and devilish fires. An unknown knight arrives in York as puzzling letters of assassination are found near the murder victims hideously charred remains. Sir Hugh strives to seek the cause of these mysterious deadly fires and in doing so, puts his own life at risk.
PC Doherty's depictions of medieval England are truly most outstanding and convey historical facts of the time.

If like me, you chew through books at a rate of knots, you'll be pleased to know there's enough books in this series to not make you feel short changed. Good plots, clever twists & mostly impossible to work it out, even if you guess "whodunnit", you'll not get how!
